The Olympics died when the US broadcasters decided sports mixed with a little patriotism embarrassed them.

I know... B-( BTW, I miss Jim McKay, I think ABC did the best job. Roone Artledge was a genius of ABC Sports.

Still get a tear when I think of McKay saying “They’re all gone.” during Munich.

ABC managed to engage its viewers. Its hard to explain why, but I was far more interested in how the US participants were doing and followed them much more closely.

Maybe it was having to wait until the telecast aired at 7, maybe it was the Cold War atmosphere, maybe it was because our athletes really were amateur underdogs.
