Despite that and other defects, so far, geophysicists remain comfortable enough with the consensus model of the earth’s interior that they seem unwilling to properly consider the nuclear reactor core hypothesis. Perhaps a Kuhnian paradigm shift awaits the field.

They’ve made some remarkable advances in the study of the core and mantle, in part due to advances and greater numbers of seismometers. It’s a very difficult thing to study.
