I wonder if evolutionary pressures affecting primarily males might have an effect here?
Throughout most of our history as humans, bands/tribes competed for women and space. Then a band was defeated, the males were slaughtered and the women acquired by the victors.
In the Old Testament, the Jews were instructed to kill all the males. Before slavery became common, this was the norm. Even after slavery, enslaved males were far less likely to reproduce than enslaved females.
IOW, we are all descended from males that won wars. The losing males were removed from the gene pool.
Seems to me this creates enormously greater evolutionary pressure on males than on females.
