That is their way of making a living.
They have no hope, no guidance, probably no education. All they have is to violently prey on others and hope for a payday from someone who has worked their whole life. If the victim dies, well too bad. Should have just given them the money. It be dey fault.

Several decades ago I lived for eight years in a small CO town.
Robber took two clerks at a liquor store into the basement and shot them both in the head.
Owners of all the stores got together. Thereafter every clerk open-carried a pistol, and there were shotguns racked behind the counters.
If you wanted to work in a liquor store in that town, you had to take combat pistol and shotgun training and agree to carry at all times while on duty. No law required this, it was just an agreement between the store owners. But supported by city, cops and citizens.
No more shootings, AFAIK.
One would think that the hoodlum class in general would learn to hit the nice safe chain stores where corporate doesn’t give a damn about their employees and forbids them to defend themselves.
I used to live in that area! Glad I don’t anymore.
It’s a sure thing that these sort don’t watch the news or they’d see that crime doesn’t pay!! They think they can beat the odds, I guess.
