This lack of diversity isn't good, imho.
I am glad there are not any Muslims or Atheist, although leftism is pretty close to Atheism.
I wonder if factmonster is right. It seems that Clarence Thomas would be Baptist, Methodist or another denomination having been raised in the south at his age. I confess ignorance on this whole topic.
“I am just surprised there aren’t any Baptist, Mormons, Methodist or other denominations.”
I’m actually glad there aren’t. I’m a Protestant, but modern Protestants are far too squishy on social issues most of the time. Better not to trust something this important to someone who might decide that their code of morality was wrong tomorrow.
What? No Muslims? 0bama will see to that on his way out the door. *SPIT*
You need to check out Southern Baptists
He’s Catholic, and even attended seminary as a youth.
Educated in Catholic schools, and if I remember correctly then converted. He went to seminary for some time, left and became Episcopalian after some racist comments by fellow-seminarians following the MLK assassination, reverted sometime after joining the court, quite possibly due to the influence of the Scalias (Scalia has a son who is a priest).
Before passing negative judgement on the “lack of diversity” (which I myself am inclined to do), we need to get some statistics on the rate at which people from different religious denominations join the legal professions; which are the sources from which most judicial candidates are sought.
I do admit that among all my family, friends and acquaintances, protestant Christians and those who are neither Christian nor Jewish are not among any of the lawyers or judges I know or know of. It’s anecdotal and not evidence of anything other than my range of acquaintances, so hard statistics on the whole population are needed.
Sotomeyer is a fake Roman Catholic and Kagan is a pagan of Jewish descent. Still, I agree, not much religious diversity.
Clarence Thomas is a convert to Catholicism.
granted its wikipedia but:
Thomas was the only black person at his high school in Savannah, where he was an honor student.[11] He was raised Roman Catholic. He considered entering the priesthood at the age of 16, and became the first black student to attend St. John Vianney’s Minor Seminary (Savannah) on the Isle of Hope.[10]
Do you believe that the current court decisions accurately observe, adhere to and reflect Jewish or Catholic doctrine?
When you research the subject a bit you find that a noticeable (even *very* noticeable) percentage of those who identify themselves as Jewish will acknowledge that they are,in fact, atheists. They think of "Jewish" as being an ethnic identity, not a religious one. This is particularly true of better educated "Jews".
Ten bucks says that Kagan,Bryers *and* Ginsburg fall into this category.
“This lack of diversity isn’t good, imho. “
I completely agree. There are WAY too many Yankees. Only one is not a Yankee. A Cauliflowerian is a form of Yankee.
I am gobsmacked that with six Roman Catholics on the bench, that a bill requiring payment for murder of babies (ACA) was hammered like a square peg through the round hole of jurisprudence and not smacked down like the 1st Amendment violation it is.
I’d bet money that Kennedy, Roberts, and Sotomayor are CINOS.
yes?
Yeah, congrats, us Protestants have one denomination that hasn’t gone squishy... yet. That really doesn’t change my sentiment.
Liberals are mounting a serious takeover bid.
