We did. But I think the big difference was that even if your mom was not home, there were other moms at home. Other people's moms would rat you out to your mom so fast. I'd get busted at the time I had no idea how she found out. So people were watching, we just didn't know it.

There was none of this "not my kid" mentality either. Guilty until proven otherwise!

My best friend and I got caught hitchhiking by one of those “other moms.” She saw us on the road with our thumbs out, drove home, and called our moms.

If we’d had cell phones back then, she could have busted us right from the car.

When I was a high school senior and OVER 18, the car I was driving ran out of gas, and had to walk to the nearby gas station. Yep, one of those other moms called my mom to tell her that “I saw your daughter walking down ______ street carrying a gas can.”
