Thanks Joe. I recall some internet thing that can “predict” the future (yeah - I know) based on internet queries, trends, etc.
Oh - here it is, called “Web Bot”.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Bot
Your summary of threads shows an obvious trend, but I wonder if the “Web Bot” thingy has all sorts of other, overlapping trends as well (purchases of rubber gloves, duct tape, etc.)
Anyway - thanks for all the work you are doing on this to keep us informed.
Google Trends has been shown to have spikes preceding some world events that give the appearance of being somehow predictive. We’re not talking the typical dumb pop culture garbage at the top, this would be further down into the reaches of search terms, keywords and public posts.
that would get pretty interesting if the ‘human condition’ as a whole ‘knew’ something was going to happen before it did
what would that mean? how could we, as a species, know of an event before it happens? I don’t mean this Ebola outbreak... that’s understandable. but something like a tsunami, major earth quake, volcano or meteor strike.
imagine if ‘we’ knew...
that would be very fascinating
So...is anybody else really, really worried?
I hope we look back at this and think ‘Sheesh we over reacted’. I hope we’re here in 5 years looking back.
If we don’t treat this as a threat we won’t be.
Before this outbreak did you ever hear someone say ebola isn’t that bad or its not a threat?
Seems to me it’s always been used as the worst case example. That if it ever got into population centers we were screwed.
It does seem like it's more contagious than the official "not contagious until symptoms appear" story.
Joe: Thanks for compiling!
Nully: lookie here!
“Before this outbreak did you ever hear someone say ebola isnt that bad or its not a threat?”
No.
Yet despite nearly 1000 deaths and infection in major population centers people on FR and from the govt say it’s no big deal.
I think we should worry.

If some new Mallard Duck Flu comes out of China and there are 5 cases with a low lethality, then we hear about it like it is the heralding of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse; but if it comes out of Africa with a thousand cases and it has a lethality of 60 or 70% then it is not politically correct, so they hide the information and try to not say anything.
Yes!
I have worked in hospitals for the past 30 years. I try the best I can to practice good hygiene. Hand washing, disinfectant gel, pressing elevator buttons with my knuckle. I lost a hip to MRSA. I almost lost my life. Three, three- month courses of IV antibiotics to finally get clear.
Hospitals test staff for Hep B, Hep C, TB. They still do NOT test for MRSA. I asked a Hospital Infection Control person why not test for MRSA.? They shrugged their shoulders and said Why?. It is so pervasive they assume most of the workers carry it in their nose and swabs would test positive. Even if they treated their noses to clear it, in a few months it would be back.
For anyone not worried, I suggest you visit a major hospital ER on a Friday night. Spend just one hour in the ER waiting room and just imagine one of the patients coming through the door positive for Ebola. Watch what they touch, from the registration desk, bathroom, vending machine knobs, etc. Then watch the kids roaming the room. Look at the floor and the puddles of liquids you stepped in and will bring back to your car, and home, unless you stop at Wal-Mart on the way home.
Yes, I am really, really worried.
There’s that but some people dismiss anything from africa because it’s such a mess.
I am not sure of the source, but I think is was a Dr. from Tulane that had returned from Africa that said he had talked with many of the healthcare workers that came down with Ebola. He said that they could not identify an incident (torn glove, needle stick, etc.) when they were exposed.
I suspect it is not “airborn”, but the high pressure spray cleaning causes micro droplets that get inhaled during clean up.
Good grief, I’m gonna have to live in a bubble after reading that. I work with hospitals and go through them all the time.
Hopefully we can look back on this as another bullet dodged by our species.
