NATAL, Brazil - After 90 brutal minutes of end-to-end action, the Americans emerged with a thrilling 2-1 win over Ghana.
"It was a grind, but it was a wonderful win at the end of the day," coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.
U.S. fans were screaming for revenge Monday after the Black Stars eliminated the Americans from the last two Cups.
They got it. At a price.
Clint Dempsey scored a shocking goal a half-minute in, but the U.S. couldn't make it stand up. Andre Ayew tied the score in the 82nd minute after a brilliant back-heel pass from Asamoah Gyan, who had eliminated the U.S. four years ago.
And then, just four minutes later, 21-year-old John Brooks rose to head in Graham Zusi's corner kick from 8 yards - the first substitute to ever score for the United States in 30 World Cup games over 84 years. The defender, an unexpected addition to the American roster, was so overcome he fell to the field and was unable to move even after teammates climbed off the dog pile. He had made his national team debut only last August, and Brooks hadn't scored in four appearances.

Incredible win for us. Now it’s on to Portugal. We might stand a chance if they play as badly as they did against Germany.
Yes — watched it live (and we never watch sports!).
Great game :-)
Well, you gotta start sometime John, might as well do it at the top.
Good game, the side’s starting to show some of those Euro touches now.

There’s no respect for old fashioned patriotism around here!
What a workout that was to watch! I have to think we have a chance against Portugal. They won’t have Pepe and didn’t look too good otherwise.
That’s not to say we looked that great either. Aside from a couple great individual efforts, we were dominated. But that’s soccer. Great that we have some size for the set pieces.
Bring on pretty boy!
Na Ghana, Na Ghana, NaGhana defeat the U.S. today.
Screw soccer. USA is already world champions in real football, basketball, baseball, and all other real sports that matter. Okay, scratch baseball.
USA!
Correct. We should stick to sports where it’s easy to score and the ones we are good at. To do otherwise is un-American.
We got by far the toughest group, if we advance it will be nothing short of miracle. Go USA!
If a goal is multiplied by seven, a 2-1 score would be a respectable 14-7 grind. Add a periodic penalty kicks and multiply those by 3, then you might even have an exiting 31-24. Oh and allow a few concussions and periodic beer and bathroom breaks.
That’s what bothers me the most about the NFL (and I still watch). Lately, it appears to exist in order to sell me Cialis.
Huntsville Soccer Fans Thrilled With US World Cup Win Over Ghana
Enjoy! I get p*ssed off when we can't show the joy in this country for fear of getting sued.
Baseball and American “football” are silly games that should not be played past high school. Any game where 99% of time is spent standing around out of play is not a sport. It is an “activity” designed to keep inner city kids from joining drug gangs. Basketball is a sport but you basically have to be a 7 foot black dude to play. I will take real football over any of these every day of the week.
They may have lost Pepe, but they have enough weapons to beat us without him and they are motivated after getting spanked by Germany.
We shouldn't have beaten Ghana given the possession differential, the defense was incredible and Howard was the MVP.
But the US played far better than Iran or Nigeria in that sloppy mess they played. We belong in this tournament - beating Portugal would be a major step in the right direction.
I checked it. It doesn’t say anything about BBC photos taken from its website.
Have they changed their policy since you last updated it? I know in posts, you can quote only an excerpt. What about photos? Is there a limit?
