A drunk passenger fell between the rails of a track - and SURVIVED two trains travelling over her.
The 44-year-old woman on the tracks at Byker Metro station in Newcastle was not noticed because of her dark clothing and the torrential rain.
Miraculously, she survived the ordeal and is receiving treatment at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Emergency services were called and the woman was taken to hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and inquiries are ongoing.
Sharon Kelly, director of operations and customer services at DB Regio Tyne and Wear, who operate Metro stations and trains on behalf of Nexus, said: “We are working closely with the police on the investigation regarding a female who appeared to be intoxicated and trespassed on to the line at Byker.
“As a matter of course with any serious incident, the drivers involved were temporarily released from duty as we carried out our internal investigation.
“All concerned are offering the police their support and full co-operation.”
The incident took place at approximately 7.15pm on Wednesday, October 16, and the Metro line was re-opened again at 8.30pm that evening.
It was the second Metro driver involved in the incident that notified emergency services that a woman was on the track.
The drivers, who were temporarily released from duty, are now back at work.
Ms Kelly told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: “The second driver involved in the incident did notice something on the track between the rails.
“But due to it being late at night and the lady’s dark clothing, wasn’t sure what it was in the first instance.
“The driver stopped the train immediately and notified emergency services. Incidents of this nature on Metro are extremely rare.”
Were they Lionel trains? Otherwise, I call BS on the story.
Oh can’t wait to hear this story as told years later by the female in an AA meeting. lol.
There is enough clearance under a train - so long as she is in the middle of the tracks and has no body part near them. Ironically, it was the fact that she was totally plastered that probably enabled her to do something a sober person would have a hard time pulling off.
