If you pressed Control-Alt-Delete to log on before reading this, Bill Gates says he's sorry.
The Microsoft founder says the triple-key login should have been made easier, à la Apple's Macs, but that a designer insisted on the more complicated step.
"We could have had a single button. But the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't want to give us our single button," Gates said Saturday during a question-and-answer session to launch a Harvard University fund-raising campaign. His comments have gained attention since a video of his Harvard Q&A was posted on YouTube on Tuesday....

i used to program on mainframe. too damn funny.
I use the escape key in visual basic/showcase queries to get out when the search is bad/endless and I want to stop it. I use it if I am getting out of a full size video screen to get back to a smaller screen. It isn’t a dead key for everyone.
I used to be a night-shift operations supervisor. I had a new operator trainee ask me "What does that button do?". I told him "It makes the phone ring."
Yeah. Fortunately, he couldn’t reach the Emergency Pull button a foot or two above.
Ctrl-Alt-Del was just fine. I never had a problem with it.
If I were Bill Gates, I’d be more worried about Windows 8.
i used to program on a typewriter type machine aka no monitor.
l * = list current line of program
l * 23 = list current line thru next 23
c * progm/program = change current line word from progm to program
essentially you almost had to know to program by heart.
wow. memories.
Survivors shouldn’t be buried.
I love those Apollo program documentaries that say the onboard computing power in the landers was less than what's now in a pocket calculator.
I had to code in 0s and 1s, and sometimes we didn’t even have the 1s.
I started with punch cards and thought that was pretty bad. Then we went to perforated tape. I’m glad that technology died quickly.
Don’t forget Ctrl D for the spreadsheets!
Blame someone else, Bill. That’s the way to go.
yup. still have those machines.
LOL. Oh yeah, and there are still useful 3 button commands in Windows (Word): Ctl-Sft-C to copy formatting and Ctl-Sft-V to paste formatting.
I actually grew to like Windows 8. As the matter of fact I just got Surface RT 32GB
I’m glad 8 is working out for you. I’ll wait until Windows 9 (Apology For Ballmer’s Ego Edition) comes out.
I’m slapping my head ... that was the point of the joke .... comparing the survivor thing to the cont/alt/del post that started this in the first place
