CONGRESS DECLARES BIBLE
"THE WORD OF GOD"

PUBLIC LAW 97-280   OCT. 4, 1982

Public Law 97-280
96 STAT. 1211

97th Congress

Joint Resolution

Authorizing and requesting the President to proclaim 1983 as The "Year of the Bible"

Whereas the Bible, the Word of God, has made a unique contribution in shaping the United States as a distinctive and blessed nation and people;

Whereas deeply held religious convictions springing from the Holy Scriptures led to the early settlement of our Nation;

Whereas Biblical teachings inspired concepts of civil government that are contained in our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States;

Whereas many of our great national leaders-among them Presidents Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, and Wilson-paid tribute to the surpassing influence of the Bible in our country's development, as in the words of President Jackson that the Bible is "the rock on which our Republic rests";

Whereas the history of our Nation clearly illustrates the value of voluntarily applying the teachings of the Scriptures in the lives of individuals, families, and societies;

Whereas this Nation now faces great challenges that will test this Nation as it has never been tested before; and

Whereas that renewing our knowledge of and faith in God through Holy Scripture can strengthen us as a nation and a people: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the President is authorized and requested to designate 1983 as a national "Year of the Bible" in recognition of both the formative influence the Bible has been for our Nation, and our national need to study and apply the teachings of the Holy Scriptures.

Approved October 4, 1982

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ."--Patrick Henry

While everyone has the right to believe the Bible is the ‘true word of God’, I don’t believe the government should have done this. I can see how it garnered support, back in 1982. But that was then, and this is now.

If we allow Government to ‘declare’ the Bible as the ‘true word of God’, then our government can just as easily declare some ‘other’ religious text as the ‘true word of God’.

Think about that.

I do. I'd like to see it every year. As long as we acknowledge a power higher than government, our republic will likely survive. As it is, it won't.

Biblical teachings inspired concepts of civil government that are contained in our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States;

Factually correct. It it the sort of history that should be taught every year in all K-12 schools.

I do. I'd like to see it every year.

OK. So what if Obama reissues this 'law', but with the Koran instead of the Bible ?

Is there any statues of Allah in DC or any carvings in the stonework that borders any US government buildings or museums? I’m not aware of any. The SCOTUS has the 10 Commandments inside their building.

The tit for tat argument taught to all Americans today, there is no we, no American culture, everything is equal.

If we aren't fighting to preserve the true America then we aren't conservatives.

It was a resolution, not law. Secondly, I hope Hussein does just that. Let's open a nationwide discussion in all media on the merits of Christianity and barbaric islam and what both mean to our republic and freedoms.

Thank you for your response.

Not yet, anyway.

The SCOTUS has the 10 Commandments inside their building.

Yeah... it's a pity they don't follow them anymore.

And.. Thank you for your response.

The tit for tat argument taught to all Americans today, there is no we, no American culture, everything is equal.

I agree. It's a lie we are taught to follow, yet every other 'society' around the world INSISTS that we respect and follow THEIR culture.

If we aren't fighting to preserve the true America then we aren't conservatives.

Again, agreed. My point was that whereas the original 'resolution' made sense at the time and no one was worried then about how it could be turned against Christianity, I think that just about anyone would admit that TODAY, that very thing can EASILY happen.

Try telling a MUSLIM, in the US, that they cannot have a PRAYER session in SCHOOL, or at WORK.

Now, if you are Christian, try telling your children they must INSIST on PRAYER TIME at school. What do you think will happen ?

Thank you for your response, and Thank You for providing that 'correction'.

Secondly, I hope Hussein does just that. Let's open a nationwide discussion in all media on the merits of Christianity and barbaric islam and what both mean to our republic and freedoms.

Sorry, discussing 'barbaric islam' would be an insult to the prophet Mohammed (sp?) and you know how Obama feels about that. It simply would not be allowed.

Name ONE major Media conglomerate that would 'sponsor' and 'broadcast' such a 'nationwide discussion' on that subject.

P.S. What if Obama were to issue it as an Executive Order, or get it passed as a law ?

As a matter of fact, yes. Muhammed is part of the frieze that looks down on the Supreme Court.
