Radioactive Tuna from Japan Found Off Calif. Coast

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Scientists say that migrating Pacific bluefin tuna off California's coast are carrying radioactive contamination from Japan.

According to findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the levels of radioactivity are 10 times higher than the amounts usually found.

Scientists sampled 15 tuna caught off San Diego and found that they all contained two radioactive substances -- caesium-134 and caesium-137. The tuna have carried the radioactive contamination 6,000 miles from the waters near Japan's crippled nuclear plant.

It was damaged in a devastating magnitude 9.0 quake and subsequent tsunami in April 2011.

Experts say this is the first time that a huge migrating fish has been shown to carry radioactivity that far.

Previously, smaller fish and plankton in the waters off Japan were found to have higher-than-normal levels of radioactivity.

Scientists say that, even with the increased radioactivity, the levels in the tuna are still within the limits of what is safe to eat.

“Radioactive Tuna” — for some reason, that makes me think of Madonna.

I once saw The Radioactive Tuna From Japan.

It was part of a drive-in double feature, along with The Killer Klowns Who Ate Sacramento...

What's this safe to eat cr**. Who are they kidding? Maybe on a one can basis.

I'm still against nuclear for this reason.

Chernobyl, 3 mile Island (is that the right name)...now this???

I'm a big hydro fan....and I believe we can use a lot more gas than we do. My stove is electric. I always loved cooking on gas.

Does this mean I can go fishing at night and see them coming a mile away?

Will they grow feet and come after me if I do?

Of course the last sentence in the article is the one that really matters.

3 mile Island (is that the right name)

Tell us about "3 mile Island" ... Where is it? What is it? What happened there? When did it happen? What is happening there now?

You're "against nuclear for this reason" ... what exactly is "this reason"? What facts support your reason? How does "3 mile Island (is that the right name)" relate to "this reason?

You have the floor ... enlighten us.

Yes ... the article is most notable for its lack of facts.

"What's this safe to eat cr**. Who are they kidding? Maybe on a one can basis. I'm still against nuclear for this reason."

You should educate yourself, really. Radiation is all around you. The air you breath is radioactive, as is dirt and many other items you come into contact with every day. Every banana you eat has far more "extra" radioactivity than this tuna. What they're detecting is an extremely minute trace amount.

As food for thought, you might reflect on the fact that the life expectancy of Hiroshima survivors has been longer than that of the average Japanese citizen. Even moderate doses of radiation aren't particularly harmful.

"I'm a big hydro fan...."

Hydro power has killed far more people than nuclear power. From Wikipedia:

The Banqiao dam and Shimantan Reservoir Dam are among 62 dams in Zhumadian Prefecture of China's Henan Province that failed catastrophically or were intentionally destroyed in 1975 during Typhoon Nina.

The dam failures killed an estimated 171,000 people[1]; 11 million people lost their homes. It also caused the sudden loss of 18 GW of power[citation needed], the equivalent of roughly 9 very large modern coal-fired power stations or about 20 nuclear reactors, equalling about 1/3 the peak demand on the UK National Grid.

Those two blokes in the hippie wagon do look fried ...

I'd guess it has more to do with chemistry than physics.
