Wait for it, wait for it . . . . . . .
What was the joke? I can’t understand the video because I am deaf.
He’s telling a story about how scarce Republicans were in a particular area. He had several amusing things to say, but the main story is that this Republican was campaigning out in a Democrat rural area and the farmer and farmer’s wife he found had never seen or heard a Republican. So they wanted to hear his speech.
He looked for a podium and all he could find was a pile of the stuff Bess Truman kept trying to persuade Harry to call “fertilizer.” He stood on that. After the speech, they were remarking on how that was the first time they heard a Republican speech. The candidate said, “That’s OK, this is the first time I’ve ever given a speech from a Democratic Platform.”
My favorite was a comment he made after asked by a reporter if he had any regrets about something or anything that he had done(some stupid question like that)and his immediate response was something like this : “Why yes, you see ___(reporters name)___ for many years I used to be a Democrat”. I loved it!
Thank you, TEXOKIE! And Happy Valentine’s Day to you! :)

It was Sam Donaldson (can’t think of a better recipient). What made that comment so good was the sheer speed that he responded. He practically completely Sam’s sentence.
Here are a couple of the jokes you were talking about:
