Yeah, I think the only reason for that nutty bicycle scene was they needed an excuse to play Raindrops, which won the oscar that year for best song.

The bicycle scene didn't need to be in the movie and neither did that stupid song (there were plenty of sappy movies back then where "Raindrops" would have worked just fine).
