Crow for one: ‘Microsoft’s Windows 7 will drive Mac market share below 5% by the end of 2010’

An iCal alarm popped up for us today. It said:

Mark Oct. 22 on your calendar. That's the day that Apple's classic 'I'm a Mac. I'm A PC' attack ads are going to cease to be humorous. Oct. 22 is, of course, the formal release date of Windows 7... Here's what I believe will happen: The Windows 7 launch will take those market-share gains Apple has seen over the past several years and make them disappear... Yes, the Mac has had a great run for the past couple of years. Gartner says Apple's share of the U.S. computer market for the third quarter amounted to 8.8 percent, up from 8.6 percent in the year-ago period. My bet is that market share is going to drop below 5 percent by the end of 2010... Windows 7 is a great product and Apple is going to feel the pain from it.Steven Burke, CRN, October 15, 2009

Let's check in with Gartner:

Whoopsie. Let's hope for Steven's sake that all he bet was his reputation. Not a big loss. And, Steven, Apple's feeling no pain unless it's from the strain of driving dump trucks full of cash to the bank 24/7/365.

Now, granted, while those are the latest numbers, they're not truly "the end of 2010," so we'll check in again in a few weeks when Gartner releases their numbers for calendar 4th quarter.

Of course, nobody sane expects Apple to go from 10.4% to under 5% in three months, but we're certainly not averse to serving crow twice.

Send your New Year's wishes to Steven here: steve.burke@ec.ubm.com

Here's a FAILED prediction from last year... One that predicted that by this time, this year, due to the magnificence of the newly released Windows 7, Mac Sales in the US would be back under 5%... PING!

Computer folks should have sold 7 professional only instead of 7 Home. A lot of folks would have been a lot happier.

In the meantime, I just kept my old computer. I'll be damned if I'll give them another 60 bucks.

This is not news or interesting in the least.

You really need to step away from that altar. You have no sanity left, so at this point it would just be a service to the rest of us.

Yes, Windows 7 is a decent OS. This from a dedicated Linux fan. I'm currently running two different distros and playing around with a third. I have an Android OS phone.

Windows 7 is ok, but certainly not a "killer" OS that has anything particularly compelling about it. If you're in the Windows camp, you'll like it - probably as much or more than XP, almost certainly more than Vista. If you're in the OS/X camp, you won't miss it. If you're in the Linux camp, you'll just make fun of it.

I'm one of those practical/pragmatic people. I routinely run Linux 'cause that's what I like and find easy/useful. Family members run a mix of OS/X and XP. I have a dual-boot partition set up to run Windows 7 (alongside the latest Ubuntu). Ironically, the only reason I boot Windows 7 is to run iTunes to load up my iPod Touch. ;-)

You may also want to try actual numbers.

Maybe that one is better? I’m not sure. When you live as a cultist I guess your point of view on reality is quite skewed.

You really have to feel sorry for someone that likely cant get through their day without needing to find daily affirmation through a computer company.

I do not post these for you... they are for the 500 members of the Mac/Apple Ping list who have requested that I post articles of interest to them... NOT YOU. Please feel free to ignore them.

As to your personal insults. Please refer to Jim Robinson's edict against personal attack and insult. You are in violation of his direct order to cease and desist. Now, go away.

Yea. It's not like the article posted does any of that or anything.

You may also want to try actual numbers.

The figures you are reporting are WORLD "market" share... this article is about US "Market" share. But what your reports are counting are "non-unique machine" hits on specific websites... not computer sales... or market share. They just give you the number of machines that click on the websites that use their counters.

You might want to use US market share rather than the skewed figures of Netmarketshare, which reports on 90,000 Windows centric websites... and who also started putting in guesstimates last year, based on two and a half year old CIA fact book data estimates of PC computer usage in China because they can't get real numbers... distorting their reports.

However, GARTNER'S reports have remained consistent and are based on actual shipments of computers and are NOT BASED on visits to internet websites. They are HARD numbers... not wishy-washy hit counters.

December 31 2011 Apple and Google (stocks) will be about half what they are now and Apples share of computer sales will be 7%. Everyday I read about disgusted Apple users moving over to Windows7. Even though Steve Ballmer has bad BO and Steve Jobs hasn’t changed his black turtleneck in 5 years

“Anti” replies to Apple-related threads are getting distinctly screechy again. Last time the volume really got ratcheted up was just prior to the iPad launch.

Wonder what’s coming down the pike? The negative spin across several threads seems to center upon “not innovative,” market share and tablets.

Somebody really got nailed during the Christmas selling season, is very unhappy and seeking to tear down momentum, is my guess.

Now, just who might that be? There’s been an attempt to hype Windows Phone 7 units shipped as actual sales; there’s a disappointment. Tablets, who’s trying to break in and flopping? I really can’t think of a serious player there.

Maybe it’s just panic.
