Hey All!
Seems like a bit of a slow news day, so I thought I'd crank out my first vanity.
I've been shooting for a couple of years now (since around October of '08 - go figure) and I'm looking at getting my CCW. I'd like some opinions of caliber / make and also holster options and ramifications.
“I carry a Sig P220 which is a large frame .45 ACP.”
I’ve tried a few Sigs, but they seem too light for me. All my weapons so far are heavy metal.
Kimber .45, 3”.
Hollow points, makes bigger holes upon entrance and can fragment.
very reliable.
The best firearm is the one that consistently puts the bullet where you want it to go.
Go to a good gun store or show in the clothes you are most likely to be wearing when carrying and try on some options. Are you willing to wear vest or Hawaian shirt to cover or a fanny pack. Want to carry a fake Bible or Day Planner? Special purse with quick access flap? Depending on size/weight of gun chosen best option is usually something inside waist band but you need to prctice getting shirt or jacket out of way. For smaller guns there are some pocket holsters that keep gun in proper position and remove any imprinting. Again you need to practice getting the gun out, practice first unloaded please! I kinda like a shoulder holster but that requires a jacket which sucks in the summer in Houston. A plain brown paper bag will do the job as long as it doesn’t get wet, but that’s just tacky.
I’ve heard nothing but good about Kimbers (other than the price).
The the Ulra carry 45 a small frame 1911, or is it to different design entirely?
I would go with any good compact 9mm or .40 with high-capacity mags and a short (3-in.) barrel (Springfield XD series or Smith & Wesson M&P) or a compact .45 ACP (Kimbers are perhaps the best quality, but pricey). Your needs will likely vary with seasonal temperature/clothing.
Tucker gunleather - Texas Heritage or "The Secret."
Look at the .410 shot pattern on a paper target. Hart to see! Looks like little pin pricks. Would it stop someone or just piss them off. Put in Colt .45, instead.

I’ve fallen in love with my wheel gun too!
I’ve seriously thought about a .38 special snub nose or something long those lines for carry.
I’m not to concerned if its only a 5 or 6 shot, because I don’t forsee WW3 on the street corner. Plus, you can’t argue with reliablility.
My favorite holster that I use exclusively for concealed carry is a Kholster. It is not pretty, but it is not suppose to be seen. Also it works well with my shirt tucked in or out.
I carry a Glock 30 45acp although my Glock 21 fits the holster and works just as well.
The Kholster is very comfortable and I forget I am wearing it. It also is made for many popular models of guns.

+1.
I bought my first Kimber on the advice of two police officers.
They had run more than 3,500 rounds through theirs, with no cleaning and each had only one failure.
I thought it was sacrilegious to do that to such a beautiful gun.
I bought one and decided to replicate their experiment. Made me nervous.
Cleaned for the first time after 3,000 rounds and one failure.
I will never do that to a gun again but it does demonstrate the reliability of the weapon and gives me confidence in it’s performance.
I just saw another version yesterday (forget the name) also by Taurus that was like the judge, but smaller, sorta snub nosed. Looked carryable.
Well, don’t do that! ;>)
My favorite is a Springfield Subcompact 40 S&W with a Crimson Trace laser in a Crossbreed IWB holster. I can carry this thing under a tee shirt and it’s totally concealed.
“In the summertime I recommend an inside the waistband (IWB) holster.”
So where do you wear such a holster? Around back? On the side?
Doesn’t that kinda “stick out”?
I fully breakdown and clean my guns after every use regardless of how many rounds.
The Kimber is a magnificant piece of hardware it feels completely natural in your hand and super well balanced and I can empty a clip very click with a decent grouping.

Go to a local dealer and fire one. Actually wait until you put it in your hand - you will know at that moment.
The 1911 Combat Commander with lightweight frame is a good tradeoff. Heavy where it counts, quick recovery from recoil, not harsh at all. I hide one of those with more comfort than hiding a J-frame revolver; summer or winter. Dark tee under, if you don't want the gunmetal against your skin, or dark tee over, and that's enough. I usually wear a tee, then a light buttondown shirt.
I'm short and skinny. Bald too, but that doesn't affect hiding something around my waistline - unless people are transfixed on my chromedome.
