it’s all about climate change, green jobs and the what people in Europe think about America.

The original space program developed new technologies which are now responsible for hundreds of millions of jobs. It also increased America's standing in the world considerably.

If you're going to have government boondoggles anyway, they might as well be gigantic projects that benefit society at large but which individuals could not accomplish on their own. For example: Hoover Dam, the Interstate Highway System, or Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles.

Individuals can buy their own health care or day care or Kindergarten snacks. This big stuff is the proper role of government, when they have a role at all.
