"Birthers" blew a big chance to discredit the MSM, but it's still possible

I've been covering the Obama certificate issue for over a year; see my extensive coverage at that link. Since June of last year my focus has been on the lies and misleading statements surrounding this issue; my goal was to show that many of those discussing this issue weren't credible.

My wider goal with that was to get the MSM to tell something closely approximating the truth. If the MSM tried the tell the truth instead of frequently lying as they do now, many of our problems would be lessened. For instance, forcing the MSM to tell the truth would have an impact on illegal immigration as, instead of presenting one-sided reports, they actually did things like follow the money.

One of the best ways to get the MSM to tell the truth is to have an impact on their careers by showing their core audience - not just those at this site - that they're lying. Since most reporters are simply careerists, that can be very effective.

Unfortunately, in the certificate case I got very little help from others. See my recent attempts at this site here, here, and here. If I could have gotten help with those before yesterday's announcement from Hawaii, we could have struck back at Obama supporters and the MSM.

Now that's going to be much more difficult since the MSM and their allies are going to close out this issue and stop covering it (except to smear the GOP as home of the "birthers").

There is, however, one silver lining to this, if people are willing to do some work to develop it. Namely, yesterday's announcement doesn't contradict my coverage, in fact it vindicates it. The very fact that Hawaii had to issue a new statement that clarifies their earlier statement shows that those who said the earlier statement proved he was born there - like FactCheck - were lying. Starting on Novement 1, 2008, FactCheck falsely claimed that the 10/31/08 statement from Hawaii verified he was born there, when only yesterday's statement does.

In other words, for eight months they were misleading people.

It's still possible to point that out, and making that point very effectively would strike at the heart of the Beltway/MSM establishment. Obviously, some people don't want to to that, but for those who do it's something worth spending some time on.

And, it's possible to discredit those who are now pretending that yesterday's announcement merely "reiterates" what Hawaii said before, when in fact Hawaii has actually clarified their statement and added information. For an example of that, see this post from Ed Morrissey of HotAir.

For a tangible example of something you can do, write a post here or at your site explaining how Morrissey is being misleading. Or, do the same with those MSM reporters who try the same trick.

The opportunity to discredit the MSM isn't as golden as it was before, but it's still available to those willing to do a little work.

If this weren’t such a complete lie, the leader of a transparent administration would be providing all kinds of proof. Not just a COB, but applications made to schools, census records and any other documents from that era that would support his position. But, nothing has ever been as far from the truth as the designs this administration has on the American People.

Here's a quick example of the lying media so far up Obama's backside they can see his tonsils...

You have about as much chance of reaching that goal as you would trying to get Bill Clinton to practice chastity.

If the MSM tried the tell the truth instead of frequently lying as they do now, many of our problems would be lessened.

The MSM and Obama scampaign left falsehoods out there to discredit the bits that don't fit.

They did this with regards to religious upbringing as well.

His Fight The Smears site said that it was an absolute falsehood that he was a "muslim". Except he was enrolled in koranic studies classes (a fact he cites in his own autobiography) and can still recite "flawlessly" the islamic call to prayer.

Talk was given to his being a Christian. Except I didn't hear when/where he was baptized.

I know he went to the former muslim Jeremiah Wright's "church", except whenever he didn't, for 20 years. And he's been to his grandmother's funeral (at a Unitarian church) and Easter Sunday in DC but no other services that I've heard about since the 2008 campaign.

However rather than tackle these inconsistencies, FTS said that it was claimed he went to a Madrassa and was sworn in on a koran (Ellison was).

Easier to discredit all questions by planting some easy hoax targets.

You may need to duck and cover, because there seem to be a lot of people who disagree with your assessment of yesterday's statement.

It seems like O’s shills have turned back up in some other posts here. They are claiming the doctor clerk in Hawaii is proof about Obama.

The MSM is in full support Obama mode on this and nationalized healthcare. The GOP willing to cut a healthcare deal and throw Obama and the Blue Dogs a lifeline shows the GOP is in sellout mode.

The MSM has discredited itself. They are the willing and useful tool of government of the USA. They are its whores, and it’s plain for anyone to see.

My wider goal with that was to get the MSM to tell something closely approximating the truth.

The only way to do that is to catch them fabricating news items (see keywords jasonblairsyndrome, fauxtography, fakephotos, etc.) and even then it didn't stop Dan Rather from proclaiming that the evidence he trumped up was "fake BUT ACCURATE!".

And at that point the journalist (and network) have been discredited. But what would be there to restore trust in the media as honest or objective?

Really? My post about Howard Kurtz is currently on the first page of search results for his name in quotes, and that's not an outlier. That's the type of thing that can have an impact. And, it's unfortunate that a post like this is tagged "Vanity" and moved to bloggers, when my goal is to try to show people how to solve problems in an effective way.

The media isn’t a tool of the government of the USA. Their allegiance is to the Democrat Party, not our Constitutionally founded nation.

There has been collusion between Democrats and the media on a number of key “scandal” stories in the past 6 years including the release of the Abu Ghraib photos, the hoaxed National Guard memos, Foleygate (DNC and MSM held more communications than the GOP did, held them earlier, sat on them throughout the 2006 election year and then proclaim the GOP “knew and did nothing”).

No, you don’t have to catch them fabricating stories. All you have to do is show that they’re liars.

Do I have to explain what NewsBusters tries to do? The problem they have is that, until recently, they haven’t caught on how to do things in an effective way that reaches a wider audience. They still don’t have it 100%, but it’s clear they realize how they should be doing things. (That refers to the way their site is structured and the like, not so much the way they write their posts.)

MSM coverage after yesterday’s announcement will consist mainly of making fun of birthers. This is a catch-22, there is no documentary evidence that Obama was ineligible, and Obama controls the release of the best evidence. He does not have to incriminate himself, nor does he have to clear himself. Also, he has now been given cover by the state of Hawaii, rightly or wrongly, and there is no way to check the statement from yesterday.

Game, set, match.

UNLESS: Documentary evidence can be found somewhere else.

You’re right about some of that. However, the point of the post is that it’s still possible to point out that for eight months many MSM reporters were lying about this issue.

And, you can do that even if you think the “birthers” are nuts. All you have to do is be able to tell the truth and compare it to what those MSM reporters said.

My tagline has read "There is no truth in the Pravda Media" for some time now.

They are liars.

Barack Obama hired the man (and personally sent him a signed letter thanking him) who co-opted the phrases "OBEY" and "THIS IS YOUR GOD" from John Carpenter's "They Live". Interesting film about how there are subconcious messages of control, submission, and obedience lurking behind the common media.

What did Barry Soetoro hire this man to do (Shepherd Fairey, not John Carpenter), come up with the HOPE and CHANGE street wheatposter campaign.

If only the public could see.

He does not have to incriminate himself, nor does he have to clear himself.

He claimed "transparency" in his administration. I would urge all future applicants for passports and social security cards to rject the notion of providing a birth certificate. Just find a witness that will say you have one.

Press Secretary Gibbs claimed that even DNA evidence wouldn't persuade birthers.

I don't think you are likely to find baby DNA stains in a hospital 48 years after the fact. They tend to clean up birthing rooms. Biowaste and all that.

The claim made by Gibbs doesn't hold water. It was his justification for not releasing the paperwork.

The Obama administration doesn't want this to go away, they like the controversy. It's worth the million dollars just to tie up resources.

But it still doesn't change the fact that he's hiding basic details that in no way compromise security or privacy.

I've seen copies of Paul McCartney's birth certificate for sale.

Cue the Marx Brothers all trying to use Maurice Chevalier's stolen passport to get off the ocean liner in Monkey Business.

I don’t think birthers are nuts. I think they have no real evidence to back up their assertion that Obama was ineligible to run and become president. I wish they had some good evidence that would stand up in a court of law. I would be a birther too if I saw some good evidence that Obama is not a natural born citizen.

As for your second sentence, I accept your point with this aside from me:

The MSM has a much bigger bullhorn than the rest of us. They have fooled some of the people for a long time. I do wish you success in your endeavors. I think the number of people who are suspicious of the MSM is growing, so inroads are being made into their credibility.

Regards,
SW

It seems since the election of Obama, the MSM has sunk to new levels of pro-government zeal. What they will cover, what they won’t cover, those whom they will destroy, those whom they will not...it’s all very telling.
