SALT LAKE CITY -- Armed assailants attack and rob a Latter-day Saint Apostle, his wife and two other couples in the African nation of Mozambique. Elder Russell M. Nelson and his wife, Wendy, were on a Church assignment when the incident happened.

According to Church spokesman Scott Trotter, the wife of the mission President Blair Packard suffered a broken arm. She and others also have cuts and bruises.

Elder William and Sister Shanna Parmley of the Africa Southeast Area Presidency. Elder and Sister Nelson traveled to Mozambique for these weekend meetings with Church leaders there; Elder William and Sister Shanna Parmley of the Africa Southeast Area Presidency, and Pres. Blair and Sister Cindy Packard; he is the President of the Mozambique Maputo Mission.

The country is located in the southeastern part of the African continent on the Indian Ocean; Maputo is the Capitol.

Pres. Blair and Sister Cindy Packard; he is the President of the Mozambique Maputo Mission. The Church Statement says: "On Friday evening they were having dinner together in the mission president's home when armed assailants entered the home and robbed them. We don't have complete information yet, but we understand that Sister Packard's arm was broken. In addition, she and others suffered some superficial injuries, mainly cuts and bruises. Elder and Sister Nelson will continue their assignment over the weekend as planned."

The Church statement also includes information that authorities in that city are investigating the matter.

Former missionaries to Mozambique who we talked with Saturday tell us that they were warned to always be cautious and told about the dangers of life in that African nation.

Gee! Why the broken arm?

I can't imagine these Mormon church officials resisting **armed** assailants. I am appalled that they would break the arm of one of the **wives**.

Every middle-aged Mormon woman I have ever met could have a stand in for Donna Reed. To break this woman's arm was nothing more than a pure act of evil.

At some point I'm sure that all parties involved will pay for their sins.

As much as Colofornian and I might disagree about The LDS Chursh I really don't think she is celebrating this.

Colofornian, I shouldn't speak for you but I just couldn't let this pass by without speaking.

Than why add this article to be posted open when the antis has such contempt for the LDS

Could it be possible it would be because the LDS would either lable ecumenical or caucus and those who have nasty retorts would not be able to have their sport!

I thought this was quite interesting, given the per capita income of the inhabitants of Mozambique...($900/year, 2008)

"The Nelsons were having dinner with William W. Parmley of the church's Africa Southeast Area Presidency and his wife in the home of Blair J. Packard, president of the church's Mozambique Maputo Mission. According to a statement from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spokesman Scott Trotter, armed assailants entered the home and robbed them. Packard's wife's arm was broken and others suffered some superficial injuries such as cuts and bruises.

During the attack, the assailants reportedly took the mission president's Rolex watch and a cell phone.

Are you seeing an attack of "Anti-mormons" where there is none. Especially given Colofornian's request for prayers of quick healing? That could be construed as paranoia, or maybe it would be better labled projection.

So he worked in the private sector are you greyfoxx39 joining Obama in his recentment of people earning their own way?

Now if someone decides to answer a calling from the Church to go on a mission you think they not allowed in your world to have a Rolex watch?

Your true feelings are showing

LOL, as if I had ever tried to hide my feelings!

Some of you folks like to preach about what Jesus would counsel and "natural man" actions...I think that He would say flaunting a Rolex watch in a poor African country (while claiming to preach His word) was a sure invitation to thieves and that many poor could have been fed with the thousands of dollars it cost!

I doubt that there are ANY Christian missionaries in Africa wearing Rolex watches. That sure looks like something that a "natural man" would do.

Abbey, pre-med biochemistry major, in The Village of Hope Orphanage, Ghana, Africa during her World Wide Witness Internship, Summer 2006.

Abbey said, there are over "12 million orphans in Sub-Sahara Africa calling out for love." Torn by civil wars, disease, and political and economic havoc, too many African adults are dying and unable to support the logarithmic increase of orphans who are left to fend for themselves. Abey went on to say, "Never did I imagine how much I would learn over the course of a six-week internship." We worked in the school at the orphanage, observed at the health clinic, and lead children's church.

Abbey encourages us all when she said, Good works have been prepared in advance for us to do if we will only be courageous enough to do them.

Year 2002 before the Packards received the Mission call from the Church in 2006

Page 2

This summer, I did something I haven’t done during my entire career as a physical therapist.

I took time off from work and left the country
for three months. Many of you know that I’ve been working with my wife, Cindy, in a non-profit organization we founded last year known as Care for Life.

Our work focuses entirely in Mozambique, Africa, and involves providing a free health care clinic, providing agricultural assistance in gardening and small animal production, and education in several other areas, including
health, agriculture, Portuguese literacy, English and computer training.

We also have a small microcredit loan program. We have spent from mid-May until mid-August primarily in Beira, Sofala Province, Mozambique. Another FSBPT Board
member, Deb Tharp, joined us for two weeks this summer and worked in severalclinics and hospitals, providing greatly needed pediatric physical therapy, consultation and training.

Lest anyone think that I’ve neglected the Federation, I will simply add that email still gets through and there has been a constant flow in both directions over the past three months.

The work of the Federation goes on and there are
wonderfully talented Board members and staff who have continued without missing a beat in my physical absence. I also returned to the U.S. for one week in
late June to join other Board members and staff for our annual planning retreat.

At the same time I’m writing this column, I’m also writing an annual report to the Delegate Assembly. In that report I’ll detail current issues, activities and goals
of the Federation. But in this column, I’ve chosen to divert for a moment and share a little of our African experience with you.

I’ve taken the opportunity to record a few journal entries on occasion and will simply share here some excerpts
from a few entries. While everything we do in life has importance, I’m learning the lesson that it is the everyday opportunities placed in front of us, the choices
we make each hour, particularly in how we see and relate with others, that have the largest effect on others and on our own lives.

MAY 20, 2002, MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE
Africa has a way of stripping you down emotionally until you stand almost naked and look at yourself. As this evening wore on, I found sleep fleeing away, and then
finally, Cindy and I just got up and talked for a while about what was on our minds.

We talked about family relationships, and then I shared that I was troubled about the day’s events at the craft fair. I may have been temporarily pleased with
my purchases of craft items, but even that had faded. I was not pleased at all with my treatment of human beings.

There were some there, particularly the beggar
with the withered hand—I had successfully avoided even looking into his face or eyes for an entire morning, even though I had dozens of opportunities to do so as
he strove for my attention.

I was in Africa on the pretense of doing charitable work in health and economic development, and yet I haggled over a few dollars to help honest craftsmen, and I ignored someone with a disabled arm and leg whose

Blair J. Packard, PT, was elected president of the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy in March 1999 and releected in April 2001. Prior to that, he served the Federation as chair of the legislative committee and chair of the task force that developed the Model Practice Act for Physical Therapy.

He has been active in the American Physical Therapy Association as Arizona chapter president (1983-1984) and as a member of the APTA Board of Directors (1991-1994).

He served on the Arizona Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (1987-1991).

Mr. Packard is a practicing clinician and co-owner of East Valley Physical Therapy and Aquatic Rehabilitation in Mesa, Arizona.

Resty, since when are such things as "Ecumenical Arm-breaking robbery stories" commonly posted in the Religion section? (I guess if you wanted to have an "ecumenical" discussion on the supposed "pros and cons" of arm-breaking during a robbery, I'm just not sure if those sectists who believe either for or against such arm-breaking would show up. What's more, are you also claiming that their are religious robbers who caucus around their cause of arm-breaking? /sarc)

Are you seeing an attack of "Anti-mormons" where there is none. Especially given Colofornian's request for prayers of quick healing? [American_Centurion]

Amen.
