Bingo! I couldn't put my finger on what I didn't like about it. Housecoat. One of the first things I learned in my tailoring courses was choosing the appropriate material for the pattern. The material might have worked if the lines of the coat had been some what shaped. The only thing I really didn't like was the collar or necklace.

The color is a matter of personal preference, and the accessories were a good choice for what she preferred.

It was the cut. To be fair, Mrs. Bush looked overwhelmed by her outfit. Too much gray, too much fabric, too loose.
The cut is the key.

I'm thinking Laura purposely chose her understated outfit so as not to compete with whatever Michelle was going to wear. It would be like her; she's such a gracious lady.

But I too, can't stand the open coats in a cool weather outfit If you need a coat, then there needs to be some way to close it without continually holding the front pieces together!
