I was a part-time welding inspector. We had a lot riding on the skill of our welders.
Many of them are still at work. The Habs need a lot of refinement.
Some of the welding is done "outside". It's funny to see. First a full-size spiderbot goes out, gives birth to a minibot carrying the electric welding equipment, and then watches motheringly as the welding takes place.
It's all done by teleoperators, of course. But it beats having to suit up and try welding in space, while hanging under the hull of a rotating habitat.
Er...if they’re “outside,” where do they get the oxygen to weld a good seam? I know there are oxygen tanks, but for a fire to be hot enough for a weld, it needs air.
Like the stuff we breathe, or even the stuff in water. But outer space?
