I couldn't find for what he was arrested for. Went back to the CTV boards and someone had alleged it was for drug smuggling and gave a URL of http://home.earthlink.net/~columbus...NR82 which did me no good. So I scrambled the URL around another search engine and wound up with: http://home.earthlink.net/~columbus-indexes2/NR82
It's a card file page that shows this:

More digging on the search engines and found out that http://www.whiteville.com/ is the URL for The News Reporter. So, anyone in Whiteville, North Carolina that feels like digging up a micro-film on this at the library? :)
Anyway, the article is dated 4/25/85. Thompson was released from jail on 7-1-88, so he did about 3 years time.
So it makes sense now why he may be keeping a low-profile. I just wonder if he really had that vasectomy. Personally, I always had a nagging feeling it could be Thompson's. He did have sex with her and vasectomies aren't 100%, too.

I did extensive checking and he was actively in business developing land and owning businesses in the years preceding, during, and after that federal charge, including owning an establishment that serves liquor, none of which a federal inmate can do.
Don't take those databases as gospel, because they gather their info from a huge variety of official and non-official sources (like magazine subscriptions and mailing lists like that, for one thing - that's why you get so many names at one address or someone showing the age of someone else in the household instead of their own, stuff like that).
You have to take it further and try to have 3 sources from 3 different directions. It's not always possible with this ANS stuff, but it should be done.
For example, Ronald W. Dendy was Ben Thompson's business partner and his name is not Ben. I know exactly where that entry came from - it was a recorded document in the Horry Co. files where both names were run together accidentally onto one line of a file.
The devil is in the details - that's why we have to keep on the lookout for things like that. Thanks!
