This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
That's good news. Hang in there, Cartman!
Did I see upthread that you've lost 20 pounds? How'd you do it, if you don't mind my asking.
I love your pictures. I can never get good ones like that.
Glad to hear Cartman is doing better!
No not 20....22:) 10 to go.
I counted calories. I started out keeping my calories at 1200 a day, now I've got them around 1000, and I make every one of them count, IOW, I'm eating very healthy. Lot's of lean meat and vegetables. no sweets except for a 100 calorie snack bar made by South Beach Diet, and I drink lots of water...80-100 ounces a day. I try to keep track of carbs too, 15 per meal, and there is 15 in the snack bar. So I'm eating more then some diets allow just not a whole lot. I measure things like pasta, potatoes, bread.

Snowing again, but the big break in the weather is "suppose" to come tomorrow.
Oh, my, you've really been having some winter weather...that's so funny, when we were having it, you were having nice, now it's reversed.
I'm really hoping we are done with winter, but reality, I don't think so.
Hoping things get better tomorrow:)
Becky
We've got about 4 inches of the white stuff here. One more day of following people who should not be out on the roads in this stuff. Rule of thumb for winter driving: if you're terrified to be out on the roads, stay home!
Spring is just around the corner. At least that's what that overfed groundhog said last month.
Morning. Today is Sarah's birthday. She has been waiting to be 6 for months. I don't envy her teacher today:')
We've got rain....
Shoulda gone to get hay yesterday...
Happy birthday Sarah:) Oh to be 6!!!
My horse is strange...You know I told you the farrier said I should use some hoof dressing to keep moisture in his feet. So I bought some, and have it at the barn so that I can get it on him everyday rather I ride or not. I've done this in the past with other horses with no problems, put it on while they eat. I don't pick up their feet or anything just put on around the coronet band. I've been told that's really the only place you need to put it as it soaks down to the rest of the foot.
Well the first couple of days Harley just stood and kept eating no problem. Then Mon. while I was grooming him I trimmed the hair around the coronet band so the stuff could get down to it better. Now as soon as I start to put the stuff on, he goes to back up, today I looped a rope around his neck and he still backed even tho I was holding him...
Did I mess up trimming the hair? Does this stuff heat up some, tingle, etc? I've never had another horse act like they didn't like hoof dressings...Any clues?
Becky
No clue! I haven't used those dressings alot but I wouldn't think they'd be hot or tingle. Maybe he's just reacting to being able to feel it more because the hair's gone. ~shrugs~
Great news! With the new procedure out there, you don't have to worry so much, either. I'm happy for you and Cartman!
BTW, based on the pic of him that you posted the other day, I can't think of a more fitting name. Large kitty with an attitude, heh. :o)
Gotta love those short haired dogs!
Have you ever had one roll in a dead fish? I used to take my setter down to the river park and she found the nastiest old dead carp laying on the bank rolled in it. It smelled so bad I thought I was gonna hurl when she came running back to me. And I had to get her back home IN MY CAR. I had some carwash in the truck and tried bathing her in the river with that, but all that succeeded in doing was transfering the oil and the smell onto my hands so we BOTH stank. GAWD it was AWFUL! Needless to say, we drove back home with the windows down then we both took a bath with hot water and degreaser.
I'm always telling show-goldens-at-the-hunt-test stories . . . but this reminded me of a lady who brought a couple of conformation goldens to a hunt test to try to put a performance title on them. Big fluffy silky boys.
Everything went well to begin with -- dogs sat at the line, marked the ducks, ran out to them . . . but instead of retrieving the ducks, they lay down and ROLLED on the ducks. Repeatedly. Handler at the line blowing herself purple in the face trying to get them to come, nothing doing, they lay out there and rolled on the ducks for what seemed like hours (and probably years to the handler). One of them she eventually had to stalk out and grab.
How long did it take you to lose the 22 pounds? I'm doing the same as you, basically, and I've lost about 6 pounds in 2 weeks. I want it off faster.
Happy birthday to Sarah!
I'm not sure why the drops weren't suggested earlier. They aren't expensive. They aren't promised to always work, maybe that's why. But yeah, it's good to have the new procedure available if he needs it later. I keep thinking old age will take him before his eyes will, but who knows, he just keeps tickin' along.
"But Mommy, they smell so GOOD!"
