The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Did you eat any of the groundhog? The stew is suppose to be good, but I never tried it. My Dad and brother were not hunters, so I never tried rabbit, squirrel or any of the small game.

Our thing was butchering a hog every year on my Grandpa's farm. Some of the things us Hungarians ate from that hog, would probably turn your stomach. It is all in how you are raised.

Isn't that the truth. I was about that age when one of my relatives served rabbit for dinner. It looked like a skinned cat and to this day, I won't eat rabbit.

Poor guy. We've had very little snow this year, it's been too cold to snow. If we don't get some rain this spring I think we're in trouble.

No, not that I know of anyways. ;o) I was a very pickey eater as a kid and never would have even tried it. Now that I'm older, I'll try just about anything, at least once, except sushi. One of my more outback oriented riding bretherin once had a wild game roast at a trail ride he held at his place and it was pretty interesting. They even cooked a rattlesnake that somebody shot that morning. It was kinda tough, boney and tasted like chicken (doesn't everything). ;o)

As for eating hog parts, I reckon my Granddaddy ate everything but the squeal, so it ain't just Hungarians that do that. As for me, I'm glad I've never been that hungry.

I have everything I can in our bedroom. Wish I had room for the piano. I don't like putting stuff up but I can't be here 24/7. Did I not tell yall the last time that no one was moving in again?:'(

My great grandfather would cook us squirrel for breakfast. I thought he had the coolest place. He had an old white horse he let me ride in the sand. He had a well that he let me draw water from. Meals were on a long "picnic table" I could see outside thru the holes in the wall and see the ground thru the floor.

Lol...I've thought of you many times when I've kept one of the boys...I have trouble keeping them just part of one day, wears me out. Not that they are being bad, it's just keeping up with a small child:). And the days I keep one or the other, I keep them too play with them, so we drag out all the toys play in the middle of the living room. Tucker is standing next to tables and things so that means all those little finger prints:)..just kid stuff. All the movement and all the talking/jabbering:) I don't think I could go back and have one living here 24/7:) I love them to distraction, as all grandmothers do, but I just don't have the energy now to keep up with one.

Becky

A song I used to sing to the chilluns when they were little -

In come Daddy from the plow,
In come Daddy from the plow,
"I want my supper and I want it now."
Ground hog!

"There's a piece of bread a lyin' on the shelf,
Piece of bread a lyin' on the shelf,
You want any more you can git it for yourself."
Ground hog!

Picked up his gun and whistled to his dog,
Picked up his gun and whistled to his dog,
Off to the woods for to hunt ground hog.
Ground hog!

Two in a rock and two in a log
Two in a rock and two in a log
Lord 'a' mercy such a big groundhog
Ground hog!

Run here Sal with a ten foot pole
Run here Sal with a ten foot pole
Twist that ground hog out of its hole
Ground hog!

Daddy come back in an hour and a half
Daddy come back in an hour and a half,
Totin' a ground hog big as a calf.
Ground hog!

Took him home and tanned his hide
Took him home and tanned his hide
Made the best shoestrings ever was tied
Ground hog!

How them chilluns whooped and cried,
How them chilluns whooped and cried,
"I like ground hog stewed and fried."
Ground hog!

In come Sal with a snigger and a grin,
In come Sal with a snigger and a grin,
Ground hog gravy all over her chin.
Ground hog!

"Come here ma and look at Sam,
Come here ma and look at Sam,
He's eaten all the meat and he's soppin up the pan."
Ground hog!

The meat’s in the cupboard and the hide’s in the churn
The meat’s in the cupboard and the hide’s in the churn
If that ain’t ground hog, I’ll be durned
Ground hog!

Guest kids wear me out too... the movement and the jabbering :~) And it's fun, but always good when they go home, too :~D

Good morning everyone... not much to report here... we've already failed to keep up our schedule of getting out and walking the trails again... don't really want to go now, because we found too many others up there on weekends. Between the shooting practice and the potential other people on trail, we'd rather go when we are alone and can let the dogs go loose.

We might go to the dump today though... Big fun here. :~)

One issue Jackson cleared up is that no sperm was taken from Barbaro before he was euthanized. Precise rules have been established that Thoroughbreds must breed with mares naturally. "We don't even know if he was potent," Jackson said. "It would be great to have his babies, but it won't happen."

It's too bad they did not take some, for at least the QH or Appaloosa Industry. Then again, with all the meds he was on, the sperm might not have been any good. He has been cremated, but no choice of burial place yet.

Hi everyone!

Started my new job this week, so that's why you haven't seen much of me. I was so exhausted last night that I went to bed at 8:30 and slept straight through till nine the next morning! I hope that I get adjusted ok to the commute. Going in is quick but coming home takes longer with the train waits and whatnot. I hope that everything is well!

Hello Beaker! New jobs can be so exhausting. So much to learn and get adjusted. I hope that you like it so far and it works out for you.

Everything is well with me, except for the extreme cold. I imagine you are receiving the same thing. Temps in 20's with high winds. Makes it feel so much colder. The water froze in our barn. The hydrant shuts off below ground level, but with it being so cold, the pipe froze. Even though I hated to stick my head outside, I went to the hardware and bought a heat strip. We stuffed some old clothes in the gaps where the big front door is. Hopefully, that stops some of the cold air hitting the water supply. The next couple of days are going to get worst.

yeah, it's been miserable cold here too... :-( And I've been working in Boston, and it's always worse there- the tall buildings act as wind tunnels... Monday I have to go out and do field work in some surrounding towns around Boston, and I'll be outside all that time. (weep) Monday is not supposed to get above 18, you see. So there will be layered clothing involved!
