The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Great pics of your ponies too. Prez just looks so regal in that picture. Like he's King of the World.

Well shoot! You had it the first time, although it was the thumbnail. If you go all the way into Snapfish and call up the full screen size of that picture and copy and paste the full properties it ought to show up. Keep trying, you'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

Did you know that you can click "Preview" first instead of "Post" and you'll be able to see if it's going to work right before you post it and might be able to figure out what you did wrong and fix it?

Oh, I did. Then I thought I might not be seeing it correctly, so I posted, but ah no! I don't know what's going on there. I'll get back to it later. What is it? ah! maybe that's it. Hang on...

Ha! Okay -- this is the 'old' farm that we are sadly trying to sell. The 'new' one is home for my daughter, 2 of our dogs, 6 of our cats, and 5 horses -- that was the beautiful sunrise I posted yesterday in thumbnail. Bless her for taking on all this responsibility.

Good morning:)

Cold and windy, but the sun is shining so that helps. We are not going to get above freezing now for a few days, and have chances of snow Wed. and Thurs.

The farrier was here yesterday, finally. I gave him the written instructions from the vet. The result: 1. We put a samller shoe on him, he said he only put the larger one on to give him more support, and the smaller one will not be too small. 2. He did get his angle gauge out and Harley's feet were off by a 2 degree difference, so he fixed that. 3. he said, and the vet had told me this could be a possibility, that Harley grows more heel on one side then the other. Trying to go 8 weeks between shoeings (something I've never done before, I've always shoed at 6 week intervals), won't work for him since his feet do grow different.By 8 weeks the difference in the angle is significant enough to be a problem, maybe:)...Mack was out there, and Chris showed him what he was talking about, I was holding the horse so couldn't look. Mack said he could see that the angles were different, but thought there was a possibility that Chris was using that as an excuse to cover his mistake, and that he just needed to trim him properly. I'm going to ask each time that he use his gauge.

With the weather we are having, I probably won't ride, but maybe giving him a week to adjust to the new shoes will be good. Altho, I may try to get out a lunge him a bit today, to see how he is moving.

Beautiful pictures Hair:) Is your Dad a pictureholic too:)?

It looks so cold in the pictures of your walk...maybe just because it's cold here. I'm hoping to get back to walking today too, but I'll have to take the roads, way to much mud here. There is still ice around in shady spots.

Well hopefully he's got him squared up this time. Sometimes I think that farriers get in too big of a hurry, trying to cram too many horses into one day and they don't pay attention to what they're doing. Doctors do the same thing though, so it's not just them. Everybody's trying to make a buck.

How old is your daughter? She sure sounds like a very responsible person to stay there by herself and see to everything like that.

I agree, but in Chris's defense, he doesn't shoe that much anymore. He has back problems, from a tractor accident he had a few years back. He'd like to get out of shoeing all together....so I think his mistakes come from he is ususally hurting when he is working, which isn't any better.

She's 23. She has finished her first degree (economics) and wants to run a business for a while, which is one of the possible prerequisites to getting an MBA, so she has taken over my business (a tack shop) and set herself up on this small acreage with the horses (3 of them are 'hers'). She IS young to be so responsible, and we are daily on the phone, and sometimes it's touch-and-go, but there's no better training for life. You've just gotta do it!

If the angle has been changed even a little, time for all his tendons to stretch and adjust to it would be good, so it's probably not a bad thing if you can't work him this week.

I think it's not uncommon for feet to be slightly different, there's lots of posts on the farrier forum about horses that are 'high/low' and I think the best course really is to trim each foot for the angle it should be at, not necessarily try to make them the same. So I guess it will depend now on what each foot should be if it had a correct trim. If they're only different because he's let one get a little off, then hopefully it'll be fixed now. If not, trying to force them to be the same might make him worse. Since this problem is new, I'll hope not. I hope it's fixed! Let this be the year we are not having to obsess on mystery lamenesses! (if only)

Good morning :~) It's a little cold here, but we are getting above freezing during the day. Yesterday we walked from the trailhead by the creek, all the way up that first big climb, and then through the woods until we came out at the first clearcut. I don't care what anyone says, it's a lot more work going up hill than it is going down. :~) We rested there, no pictures because nothing caught my eye that was worth photographing. I'm really eager to see all the trails, I think the walks are good for us, we'll see how far we'll get.

Yesterday I explored a little off trail looking for tracks around water's edge and other interesting things I can't normally do on horseback. Didn't find any bear tracks, but we did find raccoon tracks and some other critter that was smaller than a dog and had a lot of toes... bobcat maybe? It didn't photograph well but I think it has six toes:

I'll tell you something: she has no time for carousing! She did some of that at university, and now it's over. Keep 'em busy, I say!

I agree that going up is harder, does some one say different?

Your trails would be a challenging walk:). Good for you for doing it.
