Even if you're in the medical field, necrotizing fasciitis will just freaking amaze you with how fast it can progress, both locally and systemically. You can literally go from being healthy to being on death's doorstep in a matter of hours. And being diabetic is definitely an added risk factor. The layman's term is usually "flesh eating bacteria" and most of these lay terms are inaccurate or exaggerated but in this case, it's pretty darn accurate. Bad scene, all the way around. And smells horrendous too, I might add.

I saw a junkie who lost one of his biceps and all the tissue over it to necrotizing fasciitis when I was a third year medical student. It's not something easily forgotten.
