"You have no idea what it's like to almost lose your daughter and then to make the decision to have one of her breasts removed," she said. "Some people say 'It's just a breast.' They aren't an 18-year old girl. It's devastating for her and for the family." And what did you say, dear mom, when your 18 year old daughter came to you and told you that she was going to do this? "What a great idea? It will look soooo nice when you show all your friends and neighbours your breasts?" Sheeeesh.

Even if you're in the medical field, necrotizing fasciitis will just freaking amaze you with how fast it can progress, both locally and systemically. You can literally go from being healthy to being on death's doorstep in a matter of hours. And being diabetic is definitely an added risk factor. The layman's term is usually "flesh eating bacteria" and most of these lay terms are inaccurate or exaggerated but in this case, it's pretty darn accurate. Bad scene, all the way around. And smells horrendous too, I might add.

Edington is diabetic, which left her susceptible to infection, he said. I feel very sorry for her but DANG! How stupid can you be? Diabetics have trouble healing in the first place and should keep a careful eye on any wounds.

I think it's not so much that she's afraid of what people may be thinking as what she KNOWS people WILL be thinking. I wonder if her parents encouraged her to get the piercing. Was this their birthday present to her or was it a present she bought for herself? What could she have been thinking? She must have been dreaming of some kind of fantasy thing like, 'The Emancipation of Stephanie!', or some weird thing like that. She should spend some time on the high school circuit warning of the dangers of piercing.

I always thought having pieces of metal dangling in open wounds on the eyebrow, forehead, cheek or chin or anywhere else is the sickest thing anyone can think of having.
Sick, and an unpleasant sight too.

OUCH!!!
Good thing she didn't get her tongue pierced. Unlikey the procedure caused the infection? I wouldn't bet on it. It's the first thing I'd think of. And why'd she wait so long to see a doctor? She should have gone at first sign of infection, ESPECIALLY since she was diabetic.
A lot of stupiditiy there.

Good grief--it's saddening as much as it's sickening...
I never did understand why people my age have to have piercings--the whole concept is lost on me.
IMHO, while she's 18 and obviously able to make her own decisions, she clearly hasn't learned that to every decision lies a consequence. It's a real shame though that she loses one of her breasts at 18 as a result of a poor choice--prayers for this young lady...

Poor kid. I know I made some bad decisions when I was younger, and for the most part was lucky. This girl wasn't, and her bad decision will affect her the rest of her life. It's sad.
