Today, Americans have forsaken the creator for the creation and have decided that they would value our "civil liberties" than protecting western civilization and rich white people from the tender mercies of radical Islamic terrorists. Selfish liberals insist and whine that Bush has no right to spy on Americans and ban certain undesirables from using our airlines. They demand the right to criticize and blaspheeme the name of our supreme commander and cheef George W Bush while forcing multiculturalism down our throats and praising Bill Clinton. We all know however that it's totally Clintons fult for everything bad in america. Now we are at war and we must make a decision. support the safty of America and defeat terrorists, or support civil liberties and give victory to the enemy. Its all because of Bill Clinton and civil liberties that we are in this war so it is only fair that we give it up. no one said life was supposed to be fair you liberal crybabys. Dont give me that rubbish about equality and diversity. WE ARE AT WAR! If your not for Bush and against civil liberties your a terrorist! Your probably even a Communist and should be detained. Therefore fellow Americans we must throw all of our trust and resources behind George W Bush and behind this war with no ifs ands or buts. I've been having a lot of fun designing aerodynamic shells with air brake panels and crash resistant hulls for m/c - it's interesting. I've thought about kevlar.

Then there's aerodynamic high speed stabilization - lot of possibilities in that area.

I don't think I could handle two pounds of lobster, even though the first five years of my life were spent on an island. I would have to have steak with mine...and lots of drawn butter. ;o]

Yeah good point. The plane was 60,000 feet when it dropped it. Had the plane not turned around (and so traveled in the opposite direction of the bomb) it would have been consumed.

That definently would have created a tsunami. Bikini Baker was an itty bitty 20 kiloton device and it created a 25 foot tsunami. It was contained inside the atoll because of all the islands. Ivy Mike created a 200 foot tsunami that wiped out anything that survived the sockwave within a area a few miles wide. Tsar Bomba detonated at the sea floor would create a monstrous wave. Although it would not effect the area that the 2004 Tsunami did, anything within a few hundred miles would be subject to a 1000 foot high wave.

You should read Icefire by Reeves Gabrieles and I frogot the other author's name. It is about a plot to use a series of simultanious nuclear detonations to collapse the Ross Ice Shelf in the antarctic.

clumsy, ugly, kludgy, restrictive, burdonsome, imprecise abortions, those are.

(besides - who in his right mind wants to bother grizzly bears so very much???)

though the pneumatic padding the guy came up with was quite nifty, and IIRC is being incorporated in sports armors. gotta give him that much.

thing about "unkillable" or "indestructible" anything: anything which can be built can be unbuilt, at least at the mass and energy ranges humans can work with now. I don't like such terms - the "unsinkable" Titanic looms in my mind whenever I hear them ;)

as to my little project - I'm trying to find a way to solve a small handful of problems within fairly tight conceptual strictures.

the problems:
1. modern ballistic armor is heavy, and shall remain so. No matter what materials innovations come to pass, no matter how strong the materials become per-kilo, some jackanapes will always up the load to at or near the maximum an average infantryman can handle, using the rationale that "it'd be good to armor the soldier against the NEXT level of threat, too". So... the weight issue can be considered durable, if not perpetual.
Having all that weight depending from the neck and shoulders severely interferes with the soldier's ability to breathe easily, adversely affects his balance and agility, and contributes to accelerated fatigue-related degradation of the soldier's military potency.

2. Modern armors impede thermal transfer in two basic ways: they quite tightly ride and cover (and thus insulate) primary heat exchange areas on the body, and they impede air circulation on the skin over very broad swathes of the body.
This leads to the soldier overheating.
Overheating is bad. Especially in a hot climate. Listing all of the degrading effects on the solitary soldier would take forever (let alone factoring in the logistical effects - water and medical needs, etc...).
Just take it as a given: Overheating is BAD.
This is a design -ah- issue directly resulting from the poor load-bearing built into the armor's design - modern armors are designed as bulked-up and stiffened modifications of GARMENTS.
Stupid, really. Just plain intellectual sloppiness.
Modern armorers have, for whatever reason, chosen to ignore the wealth of information readily available from medieval designs... and from your common insects, for that matter.
Stupid, really. Just plain stoo-pid.

3. Modern ballistic armors are cumbersome: they reduce the flexibility of the body to an absurd, inconvenient, and often enoug a dangerous degree. This is another effect of the "heavy clothing" design paradigm.

These are the problems, and define much of the conceptual parameters.
Weight is a given.
Stiffness *of the armor materials themselves* is a given.
The trick is to distribute the load in a biomechanically sound manner, increase overall unit flexibility, and reduce overheating. There are secondary objectives, but these are the principal ones.
