Movie Review – The Exorcism of Emily Rose – Proof that Truth makes the Best Drama

TORONTO, September 8, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The rule that Truth is scarier than fiction, seems to have been largely lost on Hollywood along with most other guidelines for quality filmmaking. An implausible film cannot frighten. But The Exorcism of Emily Rose is different in that it followed the rule. It broke not once from the evidence of real demonic possession and the theological rules governing it.

Most people will compare Emily Rose with The Exorcist, the controversial 1973 film that was also based on recorded accounts of real exorcisms. But for anyone who likes a good supernatural thriller it might be a hint to know that the reasons the ludicrously bad 2003 film, “The Order” was an ignominious fiasco are the same that Emily Rose is a seriously good – and scary – film about the supernatural.

Director Scott Derrickson seems to understand the rule. In pre-release interviews, he said that even the homework scared him. “The research phase was horrible,” Derrickson, a Christian, said. “I am glad that I know so much about it. That's good knowledge to have… But I will never do that again.”

Emily Rose largely eschews the usual trappings of a movie about the Catholic Church. There are no velvet vestments, gorgeous Gothic churches, baroque altars or depictions of magnificent liturgy so beloved of Hollywood filmmakers and traditional Catholics alike. The Catholicism depicted is the dull work-a-day variety, that of ordinary people caught up in something bigger than themselves that has become terrifying and incomprehensible.

I really don't what to think, as a Christian, watching a movie about demonic possession?

I just saw this tonight. I thought it was a really good movie. I suspected that the trailer was only showing about 0.00001% of what the movie was about and was right. It's more a court room drama than horror. Very well done.

Disclaimer: I have a wide range of movie tastes and it may not relect main stream views. I highly dislike main stream movies.

I usually don't get that scared in horror movies. This one scared me, and I have to say if I ever wake up at exactly 3 am I will be up the rest of the night.

I rarely do either. A long time ago I read a book about the dangers of personal activities and possession. It got me a little on edge. In the middle of the night a fox, coyote or dog killed a rabbit outside of my bedroom window. I nearly soiled myself.

FYI: A screaming rabbit sounds a lot like what I imagine a torured baby sounds like. It will make your skin crawl.

a screaming rabit"

What is the relevance of your comment to this post? I want to know about the movie, not how you almost "soiled" yourself.

Sorry for the confusion. That reference was about the book I had read, not the movie. I didn't intend to confuse anyone.

As for the movie, it was of the type that worked on your nerves. It is mostly around the court case with flash backs to the possession. If anyone expects a gore-fest it isn't there.
