I've pretty much got my mind set on renting when I do these things, because of a peculiarity that I like to see a place for the first time, and then go on to a new one.

I've used this logic to avoid having a place in the mountains but lots of stays in nice hotels on vacation.

The one time I invested in property (sort of...) was when I invested in a private corporation to develop a few acres of national forest into a resort and I was the treasurer of the corporation. We had a store, restaurant, two dozen cabins old and new, and some services like trail rides, guided hunts, and catered wilderness camping.

When it was over one fellow had gotten testy and effectively discouraged the board of directors from running the place so I backed out, and now I need to sell my stock. A dime on the dollar is what the others got for theirs.

Like you said earlier, don't throw more at a proposition than you are willing to walk away from.
