She knows exactly where all but 2 of them are. She knows the other 2 exist, and calls one of them "daddy's snake gun."
She knows what they are for and how to handle one is dealt with on an age appropriate basis. Other than saying it's too heavy for her (it is) she has not handled one, and shows no interest in them, unless daddy is on the hunt for a snake!!!
I grew up in a house with guns (daddy was a cop) and my grandparents also had guns (pop was a hunter and retired cop) and hubby grew up with them as well. We were taught a healthy respect for them at an early age, and are just repeating the lessons.
Just like all who enjoy adult beverages are not going to turn into murderous drunk drivers or wife beaters, not all gun owners are irresponsible criminals out to wreak havoc.
I totally understand your concern regarding the anti-gun types.
Good news!
Hello FRiends. I write this with a heavy heart. At 1:15 this morning, CG's father passed away. He is no longer suffering, and is in a much better place. We are okay, just working through the details. Please keep us in your thoughts & prayers.
It sounds as though you and hubby are going about this the right way. We grew up in a household with guns-my dad was in the military, and both he and my grandparents were hunters. We kids were taught gun safety much the way you are teaching Jax-by making the lessons appropriate to the age of the child. Most of us kids in the family began learning to shoot (supervised) at 8 or 9, with the emphasis on gun safety-we began accompanying our relatives on hunts shortly thereafter, and were always with an adult on hunts until we were 15 or so.
