I think my problem is the setup of the JRE - the Java Runtime Engine - which is from Sun, but it's supposed to set this stuff up by itself. It's not, and I don't know why. Sigh. Hopefully someone at school will know. I'm about to pack up my precious (the laptop) and I'm driving today just to make sure nothing happens to it...
I've had trouble with that on machines here, but usually it's when an old version is already on the system when I install a newer one. Uninstalling everything Java related and reinstalling does the trick. But you've probably already tried that.
