Our closest airport would be Burlington...but it's pricey (sometimes twice what it costs to travel to/from Manchester, NH), still two hours away (not seven or eight, though!) and is one of those "can't get there from here" places - we have no east/west interstates in this part of the state - only north/south. Makes things interesting sometimes! Lots of driving on twisty state routes.

Heh, the U.P. doesn't have any interstates at all... U.S. 2 runs east-west, U.S. 41 runs north-south.
Chicago and Minneapolis are just the least expensive options. One could also fly into Green Bay or Duluth, which are closer, but they would cost more.
