Virginia Democrats Want to "Restore Fairness" [semi-satire]

Democrats in the state legislature are proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow the Virginia General Assembly to redraw congressional districts outside of the normal 10-year redistricting process. Virginia's Democratic Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell complained that "the current split of six Democrats and five Republicans representing our state in the US House of Representatives is unfair. Democrats are the majority in our state. We should have as many Democrats as possible elected to Congress."

The redistricted map that Democrats have presented gives them Democrat-voter majorities in ten of the eleven Congressional districts. A Tazewell Circuit Court, has issued a temporary restraining order requested by the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). The plaintiffs argue that the ballot referendum's timing and phrasing are illegal.

NRCC Chairman Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) pointed out that "registered voters who are Democrats account for only 52% of of total registered voters. The other 48% are not Democrats. The ten Democrats to one non-Democrat ratio they are seeking would mean 90% of the members of Congress from Virginia would be Democrats. This is too far out of line to be called 'restoring fairness.'"

Surovell countered saying "for most of America's 200+ years of history all of Virginia's representatives in Congress have been Democrats. By this standard, the current 6-5 split is an anomaly. I have no qualms asserting that returning to the long-term the historical balance would represent a restoration of fairness. We just need to have the court step aside and let us do what's right for our state."

In other Virginia news, Sen. Saddam Azlan Salim (D-District 37) has introduced a bill (SB 624) aimed at outlawing Islamophobia. It would modify existing hate-crime law by adding (including Islam) to each section. "My inspiration came to me after I read the law and found that it did not specifically mention Islam anywhere in the text," he observed. Neither is any other specific religion mentioned. However, the Senator pointed out "there is no other true religion but Islam. False religions do not deserve any protection. They deserve to be eliminated."

"for most of America's 200+ years of history all of Virginia's representatives in Congress have been Democrats."

Is that true? I thought only Hawaii could make such a claim.

Good job. The only problem is that there are millions of people who would read an article like this and agree with the Democrat proposals outlined.

Aside from the post-Civil War reconstruction decade and the post Reagan years Democrats have dominated all the state’s congressional representation.

FDR didn’t call the former Confederate states the “solid south” without good reason.

Democrats now control the House of Delegates: the Virginia Senate, the governor’s mansion, and both US Senate seats. Now they want even more control through this unconstitutional gerrymandering by amending Virginia’s constitution. They are drunk with power and greedy for even more power.

Oh, and the Republican Party of Virginia are a bunch of feckless, country club losers, so these evil Dems will get away with it.
