Regrets, he has a few. John Cena recalled to Joe Rogan on Friday how he upset Communist China in 2021 by referring to Taiwan as a country only to roil America with his groveling Mandarin-language apology.
The backdown came as the former WWE star and actor confessed on the Joe Rogan Experience it was a difficult learning experience with plenty of Americans then – and now – wondering just what he was aiming at by kowtowing to the Communist dictatorship in Beijing, as Breitbart News reported.
Cena had apologized to China for calling Taiwan a country while promoting his film F9.
Cena recounted the hard lesson to the podcaster, saying, “Just because you know the language doesn’t mean you know the culture,” further underscoring the move as American franchises increasingly cater to international audiences like China.
Fox News notes Cena said he spoke in an effort to spread pro-wrestling to foreign countries as he recalled doing prompter reads in Mandarin.
“You do a million of these things, and one of them said like, ‘Hey, Taiwan, see this,’ and it was all in Mandarin and the Pinyin [Chinese phonetic language using Latin alphabet] described Taiwan as a country. So ‘be the first country to see this.’ Now, over there, they look through a different lens, like geopolitics are murky waters, man.
“It was like a Ron Burgundy moment,” Cena said, referring to a famous gag from the comedy “Anchorman” in which Will Ferrell’s character mindlessly reads offensive rhetoric from the teleprompter.

For as long as it takes us, Japan and the Philippines to rearm so that we could fight a winning naval and air war in East Asia.
When we have a credible deterrent, we can speak the truth about Taiwan without risk of a global war. Until then, it would be really stupid to poke China into doing something really stupid.
The best war is one you never have to fight but win anyway.

A number of years ago an acquaintance was made with a visiting CN scholar. As the conversation over months evolved from history and culture to current events, the question of CN and TW came up and how it was part of CN. I turned it around and asked - why is it not that CN is part of TW ... i.e. after all TW was governing the country first and was in exile, no? And then to your point, why after 7 decades can this not be considered as settled.
What was interesting is that the scholar was taught to think in only one way and the very puzzled facial expression that was caused by my reversing the order of the countries in the sentence was significant. The scholar struggled with having a thought that was not permitted in CN, and could not respond with a reason why CN was entitled to TW. The scholar returned to CN several months later, never to be seen again .... don’t know if our conversations had any permanent impact. But if they did, the scholar may never be able to discuss with anyone there about the conversations.
Cena's been doing his "retirement tour" that has at least one botch per match. He should have just left his boots in the ring, waved, bowed and left.
I think he didn't see that ad for the Chinese market for anything but an ad, because:
1.He didn't write the copy.
2.Mandarin is not his language.
3.Wrestlers and actors aren't paid nor expected to keep up with the subtleties of geopolitical viewpoints.
I DO blame him for saying he's "The Greatest Of All Time" (G.O.A.T.) while too many others deserve that before he does.
As of this writing he's got one match remaining so all that's left is his acting career and $80 million to console himself with.
C-SPAN had an interesting interview with Enes Kanter Freedom, the former NBA star, whose career was ended prematurely because he refused to stop making statements about human rights abuses—especially those by China. He grew up in Turkey but is now a US citizen. He talked about how growing up he was constantly told how bad Americans, Christians and Jews were, and only learned otherwise after he came to the US. He would have played basketball in high school and college in the US but the Turkish government was able to prevent that. He would have earned another 40 to 60 million dollars more if his career had continued another 6 years.
