If they were given the choice, two thirds of the British public would not fight for their country.
That’s according to a new survey compiled of the opinions of more than 1,000 JOE readers.
Of those who responded, 63% said they would not currently consider fighting for their country, leaving just 37% of participants willing to take up arms for the United Kingdom.
Although the UK hasn’t been engaged in a major conflict since the conclusion of World War Two, the results of this survey couldn’t come at a worse time.
Growing tensions in the Middle East, and the risks posed by the expansion of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, place the UK closer to war than it has been for decades.
A conflict in the close future is something that forces inside Downing Street are taking seriously. Back in June, the British government issued an official warning making clear how the nation must “actively prepare for the possibility of the UK coming under direct threat, potentially in a wartime scenario.”
The problems posed by the British public’s growing disinterest in military service is something that has been discussed by former British Army officer Richard Gill in the past.
Speaking to the Standard following the release of a similar IPSOS survey in May, he said: “The fact that so many would refuse to fight for Britain is a symptom of a deeper national malaise. We’ve stopped teaching pride in our country, its history, and its values.

Their Government hates them so why would they fight for it ?
They said the same thing in Churchill’s day, IINM.
In 1933, the Oxford Union Society passed a famous motion in the “King and Country Debate” stating, “this House will under no circumstances fight for its King and country”.
The vote: The motion passed with a vote of 275 for and 153 against.
well old people, children and women would all most likely say no, so... that seems like a reasonable number
That was a bunch of posh boys; the Man On The Clapham Omnibus wasn’t asked.
This is different.
Why fight for a foreign occupation government? we’re the baddies now.
In the 1920s and 30s the young British elites from Oxford and Cambridge fearful of having to endure the sufferings of their Great War elders vowed they would never again fight for King or Country.
Just a few years later they were fighting for their survival from the real Nazis and Fascists their earlier naïveté encouraged to seek world conquest.
It was only because of fortuitous leadership and God’s help that they were able to survive and prevail and make it Britain’s finest hour.
It might be asking too much to hope that this feckless, cowardly British generation and their immigrant alien allies will ever rise to that heroic level again.
Because they’re not English.
Well, ya. They haven’t. They gave it away.
History is full of Empires that rise and fall. The big question is, will we be needed again or will the common wealth save them without us? Looks like the soccer boys are all that they have left.
Including ours.
It’s getting that way here.
Don’t thank a veteran for his service - it’s trite.
Apologize to him instead - he fought communists overseas so that we could vote for them right here at home.

“You Maniacs! You blew it up! *** **** you all to ****!”
Nowadays, subjects of The Crown would be fighting for the invaders sent in to replace them.
Don't thank a veteran for his service - it's trite.
Apologize to him instead - he fought communists overseas so that we could vote for them right here at home.”
BTTT
Beautifully said and unfortunately very very true.
Sooner or later the Mozlem invaders are going to reach that critical point where they fight to take over the country.
