After nearly 40 days, the Schumer Shutdown is finally over. Enough Democrats are reportedly crossing over, abandoning their party’s intransigent stance, to allow the government to resume operations. From what has been reported, it doesn’t sound like the Republicans gave up anything significant.
Based on the speeches by Chuck Schumer (bordering on the insane) and John Thune, it sounds like what tipped the balance was disruption to air travel. Important Democrats are not on food stamps, but they fly. A lot. So when a shutdown of air travel threatened, pressure on Democratic senators became irresistible. That is my reading of the situation, anyway.
CNN reports:
A critical group of at least eight Senate Democratic centrists has reached a deal with Senate GOP leaders and the White House to reopen the government in exchange for a future vote on extending enhanced Affordable Care subsidies, according to two people familiar with the discussions — even as the rest of their party has openly pilloried the deal. ***
At least eight Senate Democrats have agreed to vote for the deal, which was brokered Sunday night between three former governors — Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Angus King of Maine and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire — along with Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the White House.
One of those Democrats is Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, who represents thousands of federal workers in the state and who said he supports the GOP’s promise for a future vote on the subsidies.
The final vote is uncertain as of this writing, but evidently the votes are there to end the shutdown. Maybe more troubling information will come out in days to come, but at this point it appears that the Democrats have simply caved, and Republicans have not given up anything of importance.
Walmart has been saved!
What I read this morning:
“The deal the Republican Senate negotiated over the weekend reinstates all of the employees terminated by DOGE and effectively reverses the entire program. That is why they did the deal over the weekend. They hoped you would not notice.
Once again, the Democrats win because there is no Democrat & Republican parties. There is a Uniparty vs the People. Republican voters are generally rightwing. Their elected officials are not.”
Trump should have shut down Regan National, JFK, and LaGuardia.
I don't see any confirmation of that from a Google search or Google's AI.
They don’t call the GOP the
Gang
Of P-ssies
for nothing….
The shutdown accomplished what Democrats wanted it to accomplish — winning the elections — but if it goes on much longer, people might get the impression that they can live perfectly fine without Big Government, and they can’t afford to have that idea take hold. So it was time to reopen.
The filibuster and requirements for a super majority on some legislation, like the establishment of a State based (the 17th amendment was a mistake) Senate itself, is bad if you’re in the majority and a safe guard if you’re not. The founders understood what democracy is and did everything they could to avoid its evils.
Be sure to save that comment for when the Dems take the Senate and eliminate the filibuster on Day One. They tried it last time they had the majority in the Senate and fell a couple votes short, but they won’t fail next time.
What planet is this moron on?
“The final vote is uncertain as of this writing,”
So why do the a-holes writing this headline completely mislead the reader. And I am seeing so many lying headlines. There is no longer any accuracy in journalism and it can’t be trusted.
This deal was only for about 60 days, so we will be right back to the same mess at the end of January and trying to extend ACA subsidies which we cannot afford.
My understanding is that the deal only reinstates employees fired since October 1.
There were about 4,000 of them.
The hundreds of thousands of other federal employees fired from inauguration day to September 30 are still gone.
BETCHA THEY DO NOT LAST VERY LONG
MORE “RIF’S” COMING
CORRECTION: It is not "all." Rather, Trump has been quietly reinstating many of those terminated by DOGE on an agency by agency basis. Roughly 60% of all DOGE "terminated" employees are on furlough. Those employees were set to be reinstated for FY 2026 (October 1st). The shutdown stopped that. The new deal brings them back to full employment.
