Your Samsung Fridge’s New Update Gives You Ads While Tracking Your Food
HowToGeek ^

Samsung is rolling out a new software update to owners of its Family Hub refrigerators. This will bring cool features like an upgrade to Bixby and smarter food tracking with AI, but it comes with curated advertisements on the cover screen.

The biggest part of this update is a major upgrade to the AI Vision Inside technology in compatible refrigerators. This feature is meant to help you reduce food waste and save money, which is something I can always get behind. The AI Vision Inside can now recognize 37 fresh food items, like apples, kiwis, and cucumbers, which is a big jump.

(snip)

So this isn't something forced on you after you buy your expensive fridge, but this may be because you were not informed of ads when buying fridges before today. However, I would keep an eye on the terms and conditions you agree to in the future, just in case the option to turn ads off is ever removed.

Another part of the update is an upgrade to Bixby. The voice assistant now has Voice ID capabilities, meaning it can recognize who is speaking and automatically switch to their specific Samsung account. This is super convenient, letting you easily access your personal calendar and photos, or even use the Find My Phone feature to locate a misplaced device, even if it's on silent.

We try to, too, although mr. mm is a fan of some internet accessible gadgets.

Me?

I don’t want ANYONE spying on me and monitoring me and trying to control what I do.

Dear Lord. I can see it now. Refrigerator says I have a large cake inside. It will quit working unless I get rid of the cake.

How about it reports to your dr and health insurance company and jacks up your rates until you eat compliantly, ie, bugs and fake meat.

The fact that they put on that disclaimer means they’ve already thought about it, and maybe are doing it.

But they won’t divulge the information. Promise……

Best part about old school..

In our experience cheaper to buy, less expensive to repair, last longer.

Thanks for mentioning that. I’m guessing a lot of people aren’t aware of such “features”. It’s one more thing to check on before buying.

Just wish I could buy a refrigerator that would last more than 5 or 6 years like the old low tech ones did. People used to sell their old refrigerators not because they quit working, but because they had them so long they were tired of looking at them. I know a guy who still has a refrigerator from the 50’s in his basement with a keg of beer and a tap system in it. Still cooling his beer after 65 to 70 years. If some enterprising company would reintroduce a refrigerator with similar longevity I’d be willing to pay a lot more for it. Unfortunately in our throw away economy, a long lasting appliance would only hurt the company that produced it because of a much lower sales volume and I’m sure the nanny state would have it’s stupid environmental objections.

Oh hell to the no.

when I go to the kid’s house I have fun playing music on their echo, but we do not have any smart anything in our house.

Except perhaps the TV DH bought, I’m not sure sure.

But other than that, no thank you.

How much do they pay you each year to have this fridge in your kitchen? I would allow it for less than $5000 per year, after taxes.

“Another means for the government to spy on us and control us.

Big Brother can’t come close to what we’re living today.”

I warned that it was coming... Every little aspect of our lives will be AI controlled. Complete digital enslavement down to what we eat... How we drive... Everything...

I could see some use for a smart appliance if it prevented some kitchen disaster. Like a stove turning itself off if something was left and started to burn. A special protocol for a fridge if there was a power outage maybe with backup battery power. But intrusive stuff like this I agree...hard no.

Missed this, you are right on the money... And it will become an industry standard so you will not even be able to buy one without this technology included.

I don’t plan on EVER buying a “smart” fridge, washer, drier or tub, powered by “AI”. Who in the HELL needs “AI” to tell them about their food or suggest shopping lists?

This was predicted by a great short story called “unauthorized bread”. Free at link, worth the read.

This is the best way. These people try to sell something like their computerized refrigerator to me, a proud owner of a 1997 Ford Expedition that still runs great...they have something else coming to them. Pay as you go and no high tech appliances for me. Oh, and my RV is a 2003 Winnie also. Just keep up the maintenance and the older models will be around for a long, long time.

the fridge will keep track of your groceries for you, so you never forget if you're out of milk or something else.

This will save you the tedious task of opening the refrigerator door, looking inside, and saying "I need milk."
