I do love them.
It hurts me to see them whistling past the graveyard. It hurts that we who used to be able to talk about anything and enjoy debating issues can’t do any of that. We try very hard to keep from saying anything we actually think, unless it is reminiscing about old times or talking about what the kids are up to.
The more time we are together, the more glaring the shallowness of the relationship is.
I understand completely.
I learned when dealing with a bunch of (literally) demented elder relatives over the years that arguing with “crazy” is useless. While your folks are not likely demented in that way…they actually “believe” what they say. True believers are tough to change.
