Interesting discussion on South Korea. Possibly they can temporarily mitigate the economic problems with their big push toward defense exports, and modifications to their housing policies?

HOWEVER, I did not know their birth rate was so incredibly low. HUGE problem, and I doubt the population is amenable to big numbers immigration.

Many of the world’s most advanced, prosperous nations have seen birth rates collapse in recent times. Japan,South Korea and Italy are three that come quickly to mind. And there are surely many others.

No,South Koreans and Japanese are very strongly opposed to immigration. The populations of both countries are something like 98% “pure blood” (my term).

I would help them with their birth rates, but I am only one man.

does anyone else think its weird that governments sit around all the time talking about how the world has too many people and that we need to do something about it.

and yet... when they succeed... then they panic!!!

um... WHAT!?!

THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED!

this is a perfect example of what Reagan said.

quote “If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.”

government IS the problem!

Peter zeihan has been talking about for a long time. He has lots of great YouTube videos on this and many other macro topics.

Declare yourself a woman, and have triplets.

True. But when I saw that S. Korea was at 0.84 and going down quickly, and essentially no immigration, wow. That’s catastrophic.

I could not find a number on that, quickly. But, overall the low birthrate is apparently driven by high cost of living.

Possibly abortion legalization in S. Korea has had some effect (kind of a murky transition around 2019-2021), but it’s not clear in the curve for fertility rate.

Update: I saw a number for S. Korea for 2022: 0.78. OMG.

I blame all the white Americans who adopted Korean children back in the 1970s. 😂

Don't forget about the 18 years of child support payments that go with being the father of a baby.

I think maybe it is because countries like Japan and South Korea were dumb enough to listen to the so-called geniouses in the western world.

Peter Zeihan has been preaching this population decline of SK, Italy, Japan and now China for years.

This is one of the main reasons real estate in parts of Italy is so cheap.

I live in Korea and married a Korean girl not long after moving here decades ago right out of college.
Having a kid here is off-the-charts expensive. Everything related to children - especially if imported - is exorbitantly expensive. I have seen $1500 strollers, $500 for six cans of formula, and other similar shockers, each time thanking my lucky stars I don’t have to buy anything kid-related. In some stores, they actually had to modify the price-tag holder clips to accommodate all of the numbers! W13000000=$1000 so you can imagine how wide the price tags had to be.
We had no kids - unless you have rich parents it’s a clear and straightforward path to servitude at best and poverty at worst here. Men go to work to support their families and never, ever take vacation (nominally they get two weeks a year) so as to give the impression of a diligent worker and maybe get, after decades in, a promotion or raise. They have to compete with the hundreds thinking the same thing.
My wife is beautiful but was not from a rich family. I originally came here as an adventure to teach English but like many of my (male anyway) compatriots, if you stay past your first year, eventually you work up the courage to talk to one of these beautiful creatures and if you’re lucky eventually get married. A traditional Korean woman is to be cherished - a gift from the heavens; plus, she’s smarter than you!
Housing and the overall cost of living in Korea are also astronomical relative to wages. It used to be easy to save up for a decade or so to buy an apartment but no more. Many Korean couples see the only way to freedom is to go kid-free. It’s totally understandable if you are not super-rich.

but if they listened... it must of meant that they wanted the population to drop... but now that it has dropped... they panic because it worked.

Why even try to do it, if you are just going to panic if it works!

it would be like if the global warming peeps actually were able to stop global warming.. and then they went into panic that it’s not going to get any warmer.
