A new book written by a scientist who worked in Wuhan just came out: "In what appears to be an astonishing revelation, a US-based scientist, who worked at a controversial research lab in China's Wuhan, has said that COVID-19 was a "man-made virus" that leaked from the facility."

The supposed reason for “gain of function” research is to be prepared if someone launches a bio-weapon at us. Why ever would you hire your adversary to develop it for you?
