Alabama Runoff: Trump-Endorsed Katie Britt Beats Back Mo Brooks for Republican Senate Nod
Red State ^ | 06/22/2022 | Jennifer Oliver O'Connell

In case you didn’t know (between the horrid “bi-partisan” gun bill the Senate is attempting to pass and the distressing news out of Uvalde), there are several primaries and runoff elections happening tonight.

One race that RedState has watched closely is the Alabama Senate contest. Former President Donald J. Trump first endorsed, then pulled said endorsement from U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, and instead backed his challenger Katie Britt, a former Chief of Staff to Sen. Richard Shelby, who is retiring from this Senate seat.

The runoff contest became a choice between the true MAGA candidate and the Republican establishment candidate.

On Tuesday night, Britt was declared the winner.

The voters of Alabama can decide which category Britt fell into.

Katie Britt, a former leader of the Business Council of Alabama, has defeated Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., in the Alabama GOP Senate primary runoff election as she aims to become the Yellowhammer State’s first elected female senator later this year.

The runoff election between Britt and Brooks came after neither candidate garnered more than 50% of the vote in the May 24 primary election. Both candidates were running to replace retiring Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., who has served more than 35 years in Congress and tossed his support behind Britt.

In an interview with Fox Digital, Britt affirmed that because Trump chose to endorse her, she was the true MAGA candidate:

Britt said she was “excited and grateful” to have Trump’s support as “people are ready for new blood.”

“Alabamians loved the president,” she said at the time. “They miss the America First agenda and they are ready for our country to get back on track.”

Despite losing Trump’s endorsement, Brooks did his level best to maintain his MAGA creds and paint Britt as a bought-and-paid-for establishment candidate who would be a rubber stamp for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The whiff of outside money from New York and Texas, as well as some shifty PAC transactions, lent some credence to this.

Brooks, who recovered from his earlier struggles on the campaign trail and forced Britt into a runoff, was hoping to engineer a “David versus Goliath” comeback of his own.

Despite losing Trump’s endorsement and seeing his pleas for the former president to “#ReEndorseMO” fall on deaf ears, Brooks continues to run as the true pro-Trump candidate in the race. The congressman has accused Britt of being an establishment sellout who will kowtow to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Trump has been attempting to foment a rebellion against McConnell for nearly a year; that has not appeared to help Brooks, either.

Today is Election Day. America needs fighters in the Senate, not rubber stamps for Mitch McConnell. The DC Establishment thinks our seat is for sale. I ask you to vote for Mo Brooks and show them it’s not.

— Mo Brooks (@MoBrooks) June 21, 2022

But with Trump’s endorsement, Britt saw a surge in the polls that helped her make it to a runoff on Tuesday. Polls closed in Alabama at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. Two hours later, the race was called for Britt who had garnered 79 percent of the vote.

Brooks posted a concession of sorts on Twitter:

Every single person who helped this campaign is a patriot who loves America, and I thank you for it. This isn’t the outcome we wanted, but I am proud to have fought for our country. America, and you all, are worth it. God bless.

Britt will challenge Pastor and former Democrat Party Chair Will Boyd on November 8. With Alabama being bright red, and the Democrat Party imploding, Britt is expected to win handily.

RedState will continue to keep an eye on the race.

In two consecutive Alabama Senate primaries, Trump has endorsed the less conservative candidate — the RINO — out of personal pique, and he has unfortunately won both times. He endorsed a liberal RINO in PA too.

RE: He endorsed a liberal RINO in PA too.

Who should Trump have endorsed in PA that has a realistic chance of winning in the state?

Picking people like Oz doesn’t mean Trump wins. They will go against Trump when needed.

So you are saying never endorse a conservative, because Lefties always have a better chance

I don't care if Trump wants Oprah as his VP, there is no argument for backing radical Hollywood keftist Oz.

Katie pushed for Doug Jones over Roy Moore according to the top democrat in the state that just retired... he thanked her for doing it (and for pushing the local state gas tax).

Trump seems to endorse people he thinks can win.
Only in certain instances does he pick someone else, mainly 2020 steal related people.

“...that has a realistic chance of winning in the state”

According to whom?

The consensus among most of the GOP establishment during the 2016 presidential election was that Trump couldn’t win...until he did.

What is a “radical Hollywood keftist?” It must be a typo. You meant “leftist”—right?

I watched Dr. Mehmet Oz on Fox this morning and he spoke good conservative ideas to me.

Well, the voters of Alabama got who they wanted. Maybe they won’t cry when she puts it to them good and hard. Hopefully they will bend over and take it like a man.

What are you going to say when Trump’s picks Britt and Oz, when in office, vote conservative putting the lie to the assumptions you have regarding them? They aren’t going to cross the man who endorsed them and will be reliable conservative votes. The glass is half full.

Barnette was a clear MAGA candidate. But Trump only cares about his win/loss record on endorsements. He does not care about ideology and has endorsed worse than RINOs, like Dr. Oz who supports an assault weapon ban and red flag laws.

If you want to play the "electable" game, then just keep listening to Mitch McConnell, he will tell you who is electable.

You are suffering from memory loss.....Trump endorsed McCain and Romney....both of which turned against him.

RINOs stick with McConnell and McCarthy, not with Trump.

Just like McConnell said....we need the conservative vote but we don't need their agenda.

First, this run-off was one of the lowest turn-outs in forty years.

Second, beyond his district...no one in the state knew much about Mo. His enthusiasm in the past 12 months? Lacking, and I just felt he was either burned-out or past his prime.

Third, if you ask most Alabama folks....no one knows much about her past, and it was an advertisement blitz...with this Rambo-lite-character (Durant) as the third GOP person in the running. Three people with no real public enthusiasm showing.

Finally, some folks got to the Britt chief question...why does she seem like some 14-year old girl in her presentations? It’s not an insult, just that that’s the way she came across.

We need to be honest. Trump was a great President, helped make America great again, stopped Hillary, and lots of other magnificent things.

But seriously, Trump's Achilles is his personnel instincts. They're a virtual dumpster fire. Sessions, the Mooch, Bolton, Tillersn, Mattis, Giuliani, McCabe, Nikki Haley, Sally Yates, Flynn, Hope Hicks, Reince Priebus, Rod Rosenstein. Oh, and Pence...and endorsing McCarthy. And PA and this nonsense.

And this is not an inconsequential Achilles. Indeed, picking Rudy to lead the stolen election charge was a disaster. He may have been America's Mayor but he was out of his league when arguing cases. In fact he was by many accounts hung over and that's why his hair dye was trickling down his face. Maybe that deck was stacked against him, but our "ace" pitcher had no heat and the skipper kept him on the mound out of loyalty.

Ignoring a problem won't make it go away, and this is a big problem. Re-electing Trump is tough enough, but I don't want to spend four years crossing my fingers on him selecting competent pit bulls to administer MAGA.

I don’t have high hopes for her - she was backed by the RINO Establishment after all.

But Mo Brooks first ran a very lazy campaign, then backtracked on telling the truth about the Steal. He deserved to lose Trump’s endorsement and he did....and thus the election.
