Study: Automated Long-haul Trucking Could Leave Hundreds of Thousands Without Jobs

A new study by researchers at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh offers insight of how and where automation might replace operator hours in long-haul trucking.

The study found that 94 percent of operator hours may be impacted if automated trucking technology improves to operate in all weather conditions across the continental U.S. Currently, automated testing is mainly being tested in the sun belt states due to the more predictable and less harsh weather.

Sun belt states include Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.

“Our results suggest that the impacts of automation may not happen all at once,” says Parth Vaishnav, study co-author and assistant professor of sustainable systems at the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability. “If automation is restricted to Sun Belt states — because the technology may not initially work well in rough weather — about 10 percent of the operator hours will be affected.”

An article I saw somewhere today said that there are too few truck drivers to fill our needs right now.

Not going to happen. Human drivers can react to thousands of adverse events at short, medium and long term distances and times. No way could a computer and sensors ever do that.

A range grass fire heading towards the road and perpendicular to it.

Various herds of animals crossing the road, slowly or fast.

Trees falling across the road.

Crosswinds that can tilt a semi truck over.

Snow over black ice.

Landslides.

I wonder what the liability insurance will be.

All that trucking business aside for a sec, we need to further develop our rail and the planned trucking in and out of regional hubs where connex containers are exchanged.

None of this is going to work if the ports are not running efficiently.

Robot semi trucks are a novelty item compared to the heavy lift of trucking in this country on a day to day basis.

What is the teamsters position?

Jobs like trucking will become automated. I think we all see that coming. Time frame? I think adoption of self-driving vehicles will be slow so truckers will probably have a job for a while.

People in jobs like that will hopefully get ahead of the curve and update their skills.

At first there will be accidents and problems, then the accident rate will approach that of female drivers, then it will approach that of male and transgendered drivers, and finally it will only make sense to have AI deliver the load. Then truckers will have to learn how to code because warehouse jobs will be fully automated as well.

Lol very good. We have an engineer at work who is legally blind but was on that American Gladiators TV show and our founder saw it and hired him. He’ll never drive and is in his late 20’s. Company hired him right off the TV!

Makes a good story working at a place that helps people who are blind get around.

Well that escalated quickly. The technology isn’t for you, no prob. Push comes to shove I might not trust it either. But I see the testing. Autonomous driving will be safer than most humans at some point. And far safer than millions of teenagers and the inebriated. Glad you are a very safe driver.

I’m a big proponent of driving defensively. It’s easy really. If I’m on a big highway and there are no cars in front or behind me for 100 yards it’s almost impossible to have an accident. I told my kids growing up that when driving, going slow let’s one avoid driving mistakes much more likely. YMMV

I was being a little sarcastic and forgot the /s

But only a little.

Automation and digital everything is sucking the life out of us. Not everything should be digitized.

A nationwide network of larger pneumatic tubes running along interstates might be able to do the same thing.

I’m sure there is. That said, companies like Tu-Simple, Aurora, Volvo, Mercedes, etc. see it as possible - especially considering they’re not trying to eliminate a driver, just change the roles and allowing long distance hauls to be more scalable.

“Doing it any other way is negligent. See Tela’s many crashes with people actually being killed. My company won’t do that.”

Are you taking into account the human factor?
You know, those drivers that zip along in the far left lane until JUST BEFORE their exit then cross 4-5 lanes of traffic at high speed, zipping in front of the truck with only a foot to spare and they then hit the brakes because they have to slow down from 80mph to 45mph.
And don’t talk about following distances. Might as well put that auto-truck in reverse!
No, automated trucks will only work when there are only automated vehicles on the road.

“Study: Automated Long-haul Trucking Could Leave Hundreds of Thousands Without Jobs”

not gonna happen: railroad trains which ride on fixed rails with extremely limited routes and also which have complete right-of-way over all other traffic, STILL have human drivers ...

“A few thousand horrific accidents & deaths will curtail that absurd automated-trucking notion...”

in reality, just one or two horrific accidents would put an end to the whole notion ...

“Wouldn’t it be easier to build a rail line or several, and put these things called diesel/electric locomotives on tracks and have just a few operators/drivers/brakemen/engineers?”

totally ... and you could even put the trucks themselves on those things!

"in reality, just one or two horrific accidents would put an end to the whole notion ..."

In older times, I'd agree with that... Back when Americans were free-thinking and independently-acting citizens...Not sheeple...

However, based on the country's sheeple keeping their HUTA on the outrageous dangers of the chicom vaccination disaster, it will take years of deaths and injuries resulting from zombie trucking before there might be a chance to put a stop to it...

Reminds me of when a half dozen dead birds resulted in many millions of starvation deaths and disease deaths planet-wide, and it has never stopped...

That was the communist's first implementation of its goal of converting American citizens to sheeple...
A goal easily obtained, as it turned out...
