I think they are desperate for something newsworthy. Possibilities include:
If it was staged, what did it accomplish? Immediate blowback and apologies.
It was the best acting in both of their careers.
Smith raises his left leg like to pivot and get his weight shift into it. That looks real.
But
The way Rock just leaves his face hanging out there with his hands behind his back doesn’t look right. My hands would have at least started up towards my face out of pure instinct. That looks fake.
If it truly was real and Smith actually & purposely walked up there to smack him in front of the crowd and millions watching, then he is truly lost and he needs to ditch that bitch in his life.

I think it was not staged because when Rock made the GI Jane joke, both Will Smith and his wife laughed. If it was staged, they would have had Will showing a pissed look.

No coincidence this happened on a nationally televised event. This is a publicist’s we’re dream. Bottom line… more people will watch next year.

There is a type of laughter at award shows that isn’t real but the camera is on you and you are pretending to be a good sport....but I saw none of that from jada. she looked mad and rolled her eyes...she had a bitchy expression..which is probably normal for her
Staged or not, it was incredibly stupid. Why stage something so incredibly stupid that it is sure to backfire? Might as well flash the crowd while you’re at it.
But Will did that laugh at first. If it was staged, that would not have happened as he was acting out the angry role.
Chris Rock is appearing in Boston this week and ticket prices have spiked since the incident…..per Boston Globe.

his laugh seemed similar to others that are in the spotlight of a joke at an award...it’s a fake laughter. Most do it...but not all. Sometimes they think it is genuinely funny...but often it is a
“grin and bear it” type of laugh
not sure which Will’s was but the fact that you saw a laughing gesture does not mean he was okay with it.
