Don't know what kind of meditation he is practicing, but that statement doesn't sound right at all. The idea of meditation is to free the mind, quite the opposite of judging and labeling things.
I spent twenty years traveling and studying charismatic ministers of many different religions. I also studied and trained as a stage hypnotist to understand the process. I have never used this knowledge and never will. I don’t want a following... I have a hard enough time being responsible for me.
I provide the following information to help people understand the false spiritual process in order to protect themselves from future manipulation. To anyone who uses this knowledge to control others, you are accountable for your actions. It uses stage hypnosis induction techniques in a religious setting.
If a speaker is communicating to a group of any size, the following are the procedures to cause the attendees to surrender their individual authority to the speaker. I’ve observed this in a Christian setting where the attendees would swear on a Bible that they are “Born Again” and experiencing ecstasy. It has nothing to do with religion or spiritual growth. It is the “false process.” It is consciousness or mind manipulation.
Do not allow this commentary to cause anyone to think that all such processes are fake. The real process does exist and has many similarities with the false one. I share this to assist in learning discernment.
Preferably in an evening service or a weekend retreat where people are somewhat tired, the results are more profound.
1. Allow the volume of your voice to go up and down. Shout and then whisper. If attendees struggle to hear your words they will often lock onto your words more, excluding external influences.
2. Tell a sad story and then a very happy story or result. I’ve observed this where people give testimonials that are tear jerkers, followed by claiming how their life changed for the better after they found religion. This destabilizes a person’s emotional consciousness and causes a greater horizontal dependency and trust. (This is the reason for the trust falls commonly used in marital therapy to bring couples closer together.)
3. Induce guilt, fear or anger. Guilt is the very easy to induce in a religious setting.
4. Offer them a way to get rid of that fear, guilt or anger. At this point they feel relieved and stable because they are holding onto the speaker for stability. The feeling is temporary, but may last for a few days or weeks, especially if they attend weekly services with the same speaker where they reinforce the process. These people will swear on a Bible they are Born Again. It is a fake process.
I’ve skipped over many details purposely to keep this explanation simple to understand.
In hypnosis, the person surrenders externally to the hypnotist or leader. In a true Born Again Experience a person surrenders within themselves to God. Big Difference.

You are correct on this point, Albion. I said at one point, I had begun practicing a form of meditation that included hypnotic techniques.
