Republicans Taking Aim at California Run For Governor If Newsom Recall Succeeds

Republicans in California are announcing their intentions to run for governor should the recall effort against Democrat Gavin Newsom succeed.

The Los Angeles Times reports that businessman John Cox, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and registered independent Mike Cernovich all intend to challenge Newsom.

Cox, who lost to Newsom in the 2018 gubernatorial race, cited the Democrat governor’s failed leadership as reason to step in saying, “The state is in crisis.”

Faulconer, former mayor of San Diego and whom the Times describes as “the most prominent challengers to Democrat Newsom,” has already raised roughly $1 million for the cause.

“It’s time to restore balance and common sense to California,” he said.

“People don’t really care about partisanship right now,” added Faulconer. “What people care about is leadership and somebody who is going to fix things and get results.”

...

Cernovich acknowledged his chances of winning a recall race were remote, but declared he had a different goal in mind.

In a Periscope video announcing his bid, Cernovich provided criticism of Newsom one could expect from a “provocateur.”

“There’s a zero percent chance I could win the election,” he said. “I have no delusion about that, but if I can get enough of a base of support I can force [Newsom] … to answer for his war crimes, his human rights violations.”

It seems that Republicans in California have a plan if this recall of Gavin Newsom succeeds.

Problem is that there may not be 50% necessary to vote for recall, therefore Gavin Newsom stays in office.

People angry with him are more likely to show up. Special election. That means fewer voters.

Good point. People who voted in the presidential election are more likely to sit this one out.

I read that someone who is organizing the recall effort that they plan to announce that they will have 1.4 million signatures by the end of next week (February 13, 2021). That means they need an additional 100,000 signatures till the middle of March to qualify the recall for an election. But to be safe, they need more than 1.5 million signatures because some of the signatures are likely to be duplicates or invalid.

Problem really is there is only about 5 weeks left to come up with the required number of signatures. While that may be possible, it will take about 15% more because valid signatures are required. Many of the signatures will turn out to be people who signed twice, people who signed up in one county but are registered in a different county, and people who are not registered at all.

I support the recall but am concerned that not enough valid signatures will be gathered. If a vote does take place, guaranteed the Dems will work to stuff the ballot box. Times have changed a great deal, including the population, since Gray Davis was recalled, and in that case, we ended up with Arnold who turned out to truly be a girly man governor who caved to the Dems on issue after issue.

It is true that someone who may replace Gavin Newsom might end up being even worse than him. But at this point, we are showing Liberals we can make them lose and if Gavin Newsom gets knocked out, that's a huge victory in itself.

Schwarzenegger was an improvement over Davis.

They’re figuring g they need about 2 million to have adequate verified signatures.

Anything’s possible: between them Schwarzenegger and Tom McClintock got 62% of the votes in the 2003 recall. People like acerbic just trying to make a statement need to stay the hell out. Even if we lose killing newsoms career is more than worth the effort. Despite that recent poll, I tell you if it qualifies for the ballot he’s toast. We need and attractive... in all senses of the word... alternative Republican on the ballot.

I agree. Many FReepers were disappointed in him because he's a RINO. But c'mon. It's California. Suppose Gavin Newsom gets replaced, a Democrat will just take his place.

Please cancel the very stupid and expensive train
System. What could be more of a no brainer than this?
The first Republican to promise this will win in a landslide.

It doesn’t take 50% in a recall to win. The candidate with the most votes wins. That’s how Arnold won the first time as I recall. But rest assured that the GOPee will find a way to dilute their vote and lose.
