McConnell won't reconvene Senate early for impeachment trial
Axios ^ | 1/13/2021 | Alanya Tree

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell will not consent to reconvening the Senate on Friday under emergency authorities, delaying the start of President Trump's likely impeachment trial until Jan. 19 at the earliest, McConnell's team confirmed to Axios.

Why it matters: If the House votes to impeach Trump for incitement of the Capitol riot on Wednesday, as is expected, the trial will likely not take place until after President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20.

Hastings was impeached by the House and after a trial, convicted by the Senate.

How can you convict and evict from office someone who has already left office? 2/3 vote or no 2/3 vote.

Exactly. Turtle, being Turtle, is playing both sides. He's tisk-tisking Pres. Trump to appeal to the media goons, but then in reality doing nothing. Which in this case is probably the best thing to do. Pelosi is only doing this to squeeze out the last drops of Trump hate she can from her base. Neither side gives a rat's ass that the country has been gravely wounded by the lockdown actions of the dictators / governors. This circus provides the Uniparty with a distraction so they don't have to face actual issues.

“this is all kabuki theatre”

The kabuki theatre serves a serious purpose and is used by both sides. It keeps bad news in the headlines.

Yes I see. So the Senate would have to separately vote to bar Trump from further office. How many Republican senators want to commit political seppuku?

This gutless worm lets it leak that he supports conviction but then delays the vote. Wants it both ways. People should take his position as ‘I want him gone, I hate him and always have worked to block him and his agenda’ and treat him accordingly.

Conviction of the impeachment is moot.
+++++
We are being told that it is not moot. Here is the word on the street:

1. There is precedence for a Senate trial after a President has left office.

2. Trump cannot run for President in 2024 if convicted.

3. McConnell will vote to convict.

4. There is a strong possibility that 16 other Republicans will join McConnell including Romney.

“Senate cannot vote to bar a private citizen
from running for office.”

Thank you for the info. S. K. Bannon has been adamant
in the fact DJT would forever be banned from running in
feral elections.

“It was simply to have President Trump be the first president to be impeached twice. That’s it. Kabuki theater but with the intent of maligning his name in the history books. I believe they plan to do ‘wonders’ to the man’s name unfortunately.”

I agree...I don’t even know if it was even to stop him from running again. It may have been just so that he is the only one to ever have been impeached twice and so now he “in their eyes” is even lower than Clinton

Conviction not moot, they can also proceed to disqualify Trump from future office. Schmer, as new majority leader, will take it up after Biden is sworn in. Trial won’t last more than an afternoon.

There is a solid rumor that they will use the same actor that played Gollum in The Hobbit. He is dead ringer for McNasty and people are already complaining about typecasting.

"Trump has ZERO CHANCE of winning an election ever again. That is part of the harsh reality."

That sounds more like a prayer than a conviction. I would vote for Trump in a heartbeat.
