Bullet Shortage: Why Ammo Prices Are Going Sky High
19FortyFive ^ | 1/6/2021 | Peter Suicu

While the total number of firearms sales for 2020 won’t be known for another couple of weeks, it is already evident that last year broke all the records. With just weeks until President-Elect Joe Biden is sworn in and moves into the White House, sales of guns are only likely to increase, and that means ammo prices are spiking across the nation.

Ammo in Short Supply

As numerous reports have highlighted, a driving factor in the increase of sales was due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but it wasn’t just gun owners stocking up. 2020 saw the largest increase in first-time gun owners. That trend may not continue into 2021 – there are after all only so many people who can or will become first-time gun owners.

However, even if gun sales dip in 2021, the same is unlikely to be true of ammunition sales. In other words, if 2020 broke the records for firearms, 2021 could set a new benchmark for ammunition sales and continue to build on last year’s strong sales.

When the ban hammer comes down everywhere, many people will decide the juice ain’t worth the squeeze, give up their toys and find a new hobby.

Except the savoy criminal who never purchased their toys in somewhat of a legal matter. Their skirting of the law will wind up being a blessing to them.

“I see No.6 already commented on that.”

No worries. Nothing wrong with reinforcing information.

It would be interesting to know the quantity of common cartridges (say 9mm Parabellum, .45ACP, 7.62 Nato, 5.56) manufactured; imported; and sold in 2020 versus prior years.

Are the manufacturers turning out record quantities?
Are the manufacturers charging high wholesale prices all out of whack with their cost of production, to exploit the increased demand from 37 million new firearms and fears of anarchy?
Or are big distributors and retail chains cornering much of the production at slightly higher wholesale prices, then jacking it up to ripoff levels by creating the self-fulfilling perception of scarcity?

Working hypothesis = option 3.

Years ago there was a classic thread here on FR. IIRC the title was: “Bullets are Flying off the Shelves”

Because the soap box and the ballot box have proved to be ineffective?

What do I win?

You get their names, and have your friends visit their homes. It is just as legal.

You must have missed the massive increase in gun ownership. That new demand means increased capacity is needed and won’t be unused.

I’m guessing the regulations are prohibitive for startups?

I guess high infrastructure and initial equipment costs.

So you are just going to surrender them?“

What you or I or any given person could or should or may or may not do under the circumstances isn’t a topic of discussion for a public web forum. I will say this — I have dutifully complied with FFL, NICS, serialization, CCW, etc. I’m guessing most of us, perhaps you personally, have as well. To hop into the pot and then get defiant when it comes to a boil is just silly. We could have saved ourselves this trouble a lo time ago by fixing the laws while it was still somewhat feasible.

We have allowed ourselves to no longer be secure in our persons, houses, papers and effects — our natural rights shouldn’t be predicated upon who happens to control the senate during a given term but we let it get to this point. The whole “boating accident” gag just rings a bit hollow to me at this stage.

When Kamala Harris casts the tie breaking vote to pass a new AWB, and millions of people give up their firearms rather than jump through the federal registration and licensing hoops that will be put in place.

A) I expect the new AWB ban will count ANY SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARM (to include pistols) as Class III restricted firearms.

B) I expect that the number of people who will give up their firearms to be in the dozens, not the millions.

Around where I live Christmas 2019 sounded like a war zone. People were shooting everywhere. Apparently tons of guns given as Christmas gifts. This Christmas, nothing. I’m guessing people don’t want to shoot up their ammo.

Agreed. Many will register the rifles. Others will only surrender them. One class of people will have them. Another class won’t. Politicians of the left have been wanting to grant that favor to their big contributors for a long time.

The 2nd amendment was a gift from our founding fathers. But remember there are MANY OTHER factors in winning a battle.

Do not discount one or promote the other. Support anyone in the battle in in what ever form they use.

Become part of your own small group, and proceed from there. That is what history shows us.
