On Wednesday Edison International threatened to cut off power to homes in Southern California as a preventative measure against dry conditions and high winds.
Edison said they would cut off power to Southern California homes and businesses on Thanksgiving to ‘prevent fires.’
The utility company followed through and cut off power to more than 8,000 homes in LA, Orange, Kern, Ventura and San Bernardino counties on Thanksgiving evening.
100,000 more homes are at risk for shutoffs depending on weather conditions as meteorologists warn of strong Santa Ana winds.
Yahoo News reported:
More than 8,000 Southern California Edison customers were without power on Thanksgiving evening, with 100,000 more at risk of having the lights turned out as high winds led to elevated wildfire risk, officials said.
Homes in Los Angeles, Orange, Kern and San Bernardino counties were affected by outages as part of the utility company’s public safety power shutoff program, which is intended to reduce the risk that electrical systems become an ignition point for wildfires.
As of 9:30 p.m., 3,015 customers were without power in Ventura County, while 2,679 customers lost service in Orange County, according to an outage map managed by the utility company. Roughly 1,200 residences in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties were also affected by the shutdowns by late Thursday night, the company said.
The Socialist utopia of California: Where homelessness, used needles in the streets and deliberate power outages that resembles something out of India in the 1970’s or current day Venezuela and North Korea are the new norm.

Good o’ll Bill stopped forest maintenance for some environmental reason. That undergrowth when not tended to for 20 years, can create quite a challenge. I guess he is saving the environment or something...
“Also, to your knowledge, does anyone make a battery-powered generator? Kind of apprehensive about storing gasoline in my garage, since that’s where my furnace is ...”
There are some duel fuel generators out there for decent prices. Running off propane or NG solves the problem of gasolines short storage life.
All good men and women need to understand that their enemies hate them, want them dead, and will try to kill them.
If you don't want a gasoline generator, and want to spend less than $1000, I would invest in a solar power system like the Jackery 500 with portable solar panels.
It's 500 Watts, so you are not going to be powering things like a full size refrigerator or coffee maker. You need closer to 1000-1500 Watts for that.
But 500 Watts can save your bacon. You can power a mini-fridge, charge your phone and laptops, and have good emergency lighting.
You can buy a string of LED lights powered by the station's USB ports for $25 off Amazon.
And those are amazing.
Thanks, much obliged! Will begin the search locally first thing in the morning.
The latest Governor Moonbeam incarnation wants to outlaw the internal combustion engine & go all electric.
How’s that going to work out if the grid can’t stay up?
Idiots
I agree... just purchased a 48 KW Generac industrial propane generator for my house.
What did that cost you?
Our PG&E natural gas has been very reliable.
But as you said, this is anything but a normal year - and we have seen what our petty tyrants (AKA "Governors") will do to us given half the chance.
My mother in CA’s north state has exactly that same unit. I’ve had one here in Virginia for more than 10 years... they’re worth their weight in gold.
It’s what we all will look forward to unless a miracle occurs.
We have an 80 kw natgas gen.
My experience with solar power comes from pluging in a solar fence charger and having all the hogs get out.
Ever try to get a small herd of hogs out of a standing corn field? Impossible!
All you can do is shoot them, which is exactly what I did!
PS...solar fence chargers suck the high hard one.
I don't doubt it. I rely on gasoline and solar for backup.
Of course, if they outlaw propane, they will ration/outlaw gasoline usage next.
I have an ample supply of gasoline on hand for my generator. When the power goes out in your area, gas station pumps don't work.
I remember after Hurricane Sandy, a friend bought a generator. His wife thought he was MacGyver when he hooked it up and he had emergency power. Her refrigerator and freezer food was saved!!!
But he didn't plan on it using gasoline. All he had on hand was a 2 gallon jug he used to fill his lawnmower. When the generator quickly exhausted that supply, his wife hit the ceiling.
So.....out he trekked. With his little red 2 gallon gas jug.
He went to Lowe's, Home Depot, and every hardware store around to look for 5 gallon gas jugs - and of course there were none to be had.
Finally, he bought some 5 gallon paint jugs with lids, and waited 3 hours in line at the one open gas station he found. The attendant came out and said there was no way he could allow him to fill those paint jugs.
My friend said he took out two $100 bills from his wallet and handed them to the station attendant, who took the money and walked away.
Wow!
Yup - and if the grid starts going down, they will be worth double or triple their weight in gold. And good luck getting one, or finding folks to install it then.
Your lucky until California’s ban on natural and liquid propane gas is fully implemented. If you live in CA.
Taking out the power grid would hit the inner city dwellers the hardest. Especially those without cars.
If the left does this they are hurting their own voters
It's not the most popular thing to tell the spouse your spending money on - until you need it. Then, you are a fricken genius.
