It started when it was set up - the whole air gap business was a myth or based on bad reporting. The were also supposed to be security features but they were either never implemented or only partially installed since there were never any standards established. System patches were often never done. This left the systems open to malware like Qsnatch which is untraceable.
All the election electronic voting system are not only connected to the internet. but connected at every point of data transfer; despite company brochures to the contrary these are among the most insecure systems in the world - you PC might have better security.
